We are planning a trip to Greece this summer for a family of 5 (2 adults, 18, 16 and 14). It is my understanding that most hotels only have rooms that accomodate 4. We are planning to spend time in Athens, (prefer the Plaka area), Santorini and either Crete or Rhodes. So my guess is that we will need to get two rooms, but I was interested if anybody knew about hotels that have rooms for five? Thanks.

Even if they did, would you really want five people using one bathroom? I'd look for two rooms, especially with the ages of your kids.

I'm surprised that Greece has any rooms for 4 people let alone 5.

I would think 2 twin rooms and a fold up bed are probably going to be easier to find

I would go for two bedrooms..one double for the 2 adults and a triple with three twin beds for the kids (not a double and a third bed, the kids are too big for a cot ).
I've never heard of 5 people bedrooms but maybe they exist. Anyway, it wouldn't be much more expensive than the two bedrooms and a lot more confortable for all of you.

You don't say how long you're going to spend in each location, but we're a family of 4 with two teens. We'll be headed to Greece this summer for 2 weeks. For 6 nights, we'll be renting a villa in Crete. Although we can deal with a 4-bedded room for a couple of nights here and there(and we have occasionally seen "family suites" with beds for 5), we don't think that we could stand the crowded arrangement for our entire vacation. At least we'll be able to stretch out, with 3 real bedrooms in a villa in Crete. You might consider stretching out your stay in one or more location, in order to allow a villa rental. Some locations don't require a full week rental.

We went to Italy last year (family of 5 -3 teenagers) and had to get 2 rooms everywhere. In 2 weeks, we're going to Spain and taking friends and a niece so our group is now 8. We researched are are renting an apartment in Madrid (3 days) and an apartment in Barcelona ( 4days). More economical and we're all together. Perhaps you could find something like that in Greece. Have you considered renting an apartment? It may be cheaper and provide you with more room, but less services. We were in Greece 2 years ago with our 3 children and were able to find accomodations with some effort, but we were travelling in March. In Athens, I think we used an American chain hotel suggested through this site that worked out very well. Good luck!

The AVA hotel in Athens, which is in the Plaka, has suites that accomodate 4 (1 bedroom plus a pull-out double bed in the living room), with an extra rollaway bed available on request. I've stayed at the AVA and like it because of the kitchenettes, which are particularly nice when travelling with a family. You will also have a balcony with a nice view. The AVA is right by the Akropoli metro stop so that also makes it very convenient.

Thanks all for your comments. I thought 2 rooms was going to be the general response. Here in the States, we normally get the suite rooms but I did not think that idea had reallt caught on in Europe yet. The villa/apt idea is great, will look into it, although our stay in anyone place is only 3-4 days. Again thanks for the replys.

Can't imagine why you want to stuff 5 full size people into one small room with one bath. Why not simply get a regular room for yourselves and a triple for the kids? That way you can all get a little break from each other, have 2 baths to cut down on time for getting out of the hotel in the AM - and have a little privacy for yourselves.

We have taken my 2 stepdaughters fo europe several times - and they always had their own room even when they were younger. (There was no way I would share a bath with 11 and 14 year old girls and 500 pounds of hair products.) Then, when they got a little older we could go our separate ways in the evenings when we wanted (sometimes they wanted to do opera or ballet with us - but sometimes just hang out with local kids for some hip hop teen bonding.)
