How many days in Munich?
We are going to Germnay, Austria and CH next year. We have never been to Munich or anywhere in Germany. We would like to stay 2 or 3 days. <BR>Any advice on length of stay? <BR>Best hotels around $100 US <BR>and "must see" things to do? <BR>Thank you so much!

Depends on what you want to see. We were in Munich 3 days last year, 5 days this year and have still not seen everything we wanted to.<BR><BR>There is so much to do there:<BR>Visit the Hofbrau Haus<BR>Walk through the Marienplatz<BR>Walk through the English Gardens<BR>Go the the Andechs Monestary<BR>Go to Dacchau<BR>Many Museums<BR>Go to Neuschwanstein & other castles<BR>The Virtualmarket<BR><BR>You really need to start a list of exactly what you want to accomplish while you are there to determine your length of stay. You could see downtown, the marketplace, the Hofbrau, some of the English Gardens and get a general feel of the town in one day. Dacchau takes a good 1/2 day, so does the Monestary. Neuschwanstein takes a full day especially if you see both castles. Any museums would also take a bit of time.

I can add Nymphenburg Palace to the list of places. Also the official Residenz of the Wittlsburg Dynasty is in the central part of Munich. It is an attractive place if you are into the excesses of royalty.<BR><BR>The opera house puts on first class performances. <BR><BR>

I agree with most of the other posters. We were in Munich for 6 days and 5 nights in May......didn't even scratch the surface. <BR><BR>Plan to go back for another 5 nights in 2004.<BR><BR>"Message: IMHO, the Hofbrau<BR> Haus is not a "must see"<BR> unless you are into<BR> heavily-drinking tourists."<BR><BR>We went to the Hofbrau Haus daily. Saw no one "drunk". It seems to be more of a family destination for the Germans. A little "touristy" but a fun place nevertheless.<BR><BR>In our three week trip, we saw no one "drunk". The Europeans seem to know how to handle the booze. Of course they don't sit there and slam them down like we do here in the States. <BR><BR>Can't help you with hotels. We stayed (splurged) at the Torbreau at about E160/night for a great room with a double bed and balcony overlooking Tal Strasse. Very, Very convienient to everything. Excellent breakfast included as well. Nice people.<BR><BR>Dick<BR><BR>

I can second the vote for the Torbrau. Nice place. Also, the Platzl hotel is in an excellent location. The rooms are pretty standard, but, oh my, is the compimentary breakfast a sight to behold! You can truely skip lunch every day with that spread in the morning. Wow!

I lived in Munich for almost a year, and no one from Munich goes to the Hofbrauhaus! Peek in to see what it's all about, but spend some time in any of the other beer halls...Augistiner has very nice ones. Or depending on the the time of year, check out the outdoor beer gardens.<BR><BR>I agree with all other posters, that you could spend really an infinite amount of time in Munich... both seeing things in Munich or using it as a home base to see parts other parts of Southern Germany. <BR><BR>can't help with the hotels.<BR><BR>What time of year are you visiting?

Lived there 2000-2001. Could not agree more with others with good experience - many Munich people scorn Hofbrauhaus (perhaps overly). It is regularly full of stag night participants and German tourists - many solely intent on getting hammered. Yes it could be good, but it could be horrible - check it out if you have time, but do not make it a priority. Museums - Deutsche Museum is fantastic on a par with Science Museum in London, perhaps better. Alte Pinakothek for galleries. Marienplatz, Viktualienmarket (not Virtual market), Nymphenburg I agree with, Neuschwanstein is a full day trip for 3 days Munich I would not do it - as I think Füssen, teh next door town is worth an overnight stay. Englischer Garten. For pubs - check out Andechs close to the Cathedral - that is a proper locals place. Much smaller than Augustiner and Hofbrau and with a much better reputation (deservedly) for food. Lots of people love the beer as well - produced at a cathedral near Munich. Seegarden as also recommended is noce - but only if it is a sunny day in winter.
