Depends on your interests, also. Do you have an interest in art? If not, then how about science and technology?
Munich is full of museums.
I hope the Rathaus clock is working by the time you are there. I was there in late August and it was under repair. Only part of it was functional.

I agree, it depends on your interest. We took a walking tour of the Third Reich in Munich, and it was very interesting both on a war/history level and as well as local/architecture level. We really enjoyed it and got to see a lot of the city in a different way.

I think every trip to Munich has to start with Marienplatz (even if the Glockenspiel isn't working).
As you face the Rathaus, over your right shoulder is a church tower, Heiligepeter. For a Euro or so you can WALK to the top and have a wonderful view of Munich and, on a good day, the Alps.
A few blocks behind the Rathaus, to the right, is the Residenz, the in-town palace of the Wittelsbacher family, where you can see a seemingly endless progression of gawdy, roccoco rooms.
Better, walk down the the Fußgangen zone, past all the shops, toward the Hauptbahnhof, and take a streetcar out to Nymphenburg, the Wittelsbacher's summer palace.
Also near Marienplatz are several art museums (yawn). I wouldn't even try to see the Deutsches Museum in a day; maybe sometime if you have a month (really, it is like our Smithsonian).
If you can read German, a few blocks south of Marienplatz is the Stadtmuseum Muenchen. I have been there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Last time they had a historical exhibit on the growth of Munich over the centuries, with drawings, models, and maps.
Have lunch at the Hofbräuhaus, touristy, but fun.

Near the Marienplatz and Viktuelenmarkt on Sedlingerstrasse is the Asamkirche, an amazing Baroque church by the Asam brothers.
The Alte Pinakothek would be a must see for me, but it depends on your interest in art museums
What time of year are you visiting? If during the summer months I would definitely recommend a beer garden like the Augustinerkeller over the Hofbrauhaus. Certainly if you like beer read up on the options available in Munich and sample a few

the Hundskugel is Munich's oldest tavern (founded in 1440)and an interesting place to eat

We loved the Englischner Garten but I would save it for another time when you have a few more days in Munich. Its beautiful, but really nothing more than a large city park with nude sunbathing beer gartens, and people picnicing. Enjoy your trip.
