That is 19 if I include home, and the "questionable" ones like Hong Kong/China as two (I did go prior to 1999), and Vatican City. I could push it and include Wales, but we only went for lunch, when I was about 12! And I did sit in the airport in Tahiti for a couple of hours . . .

I'll be able to add Spain and Greece by May! Then I'll say I have 20!

I feel seriously undertraveled compared to most of the reponses, but...since I really started traveling only 5 years ago....
Ireland, England, Spain, Italy,France, Germany,Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg,Switzlerland, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, US,Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong (I know, not a country). This year, I am planning to visit Denmark, Sweden, Finland,Norway, Russia, Czech Republic, Poland. (for pleasure ...I will vist many more for work). Next year, hoping to go to Shanghai and Croatia. As I am now living in Switzerland, "visit" France most weekends to do my shopping!

It would be more if I could stop falling in love with every place I go and having to return.

Obviously, USA, then Mexico, Italy, Ireland, Wales, England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, France, Monaco, Slovenia, Croatia, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, New Zealand, and Spain. Adding two more in October with a trip to Egypt and Jordan. So, a total of 17 foreign countries for now.

New Zealand (live here), Australia, Indonesia (Bali), USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, and just returned this week from Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Emirates (Dubai), (I guess that's 14 in all) not counting Vatican.

Not counting the UK's separate provinces as countries, ignoring time in European microstates (like San Marino or the Isle of Man) and not counting 3-hour stopovers in odd Arab sheikhdoms at 2 in the morning: 48 countries.

Or 51 if you count now independent bits of ex-Yugoslavia as separate even though you haven't been there since they were all the same place.

That should be 52 or 56, depending on the umpire's ruling about Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia.

PS: Mrs F wants to know whether Transdniestria counts, or whether she's got to call it part of Moldova.

I count trips as well as cities and countries since I have a habit of returning to places I like over & over and yes I am including Hawaii but not Canada...

35 countries over 30 years. Took a number of years off to get married and start a family. Shortest time in any country anyone?
About 30 seconds in Scotland. Got out of one small boat, walked across the pier and got into another. I'd like to go back and see a bit more of the country.

Comfyshoes (who I think is accusing me of boasting, but I'm not because a quick count in any large company or government department will bring up lots of people who've visited over 100 countries) makes an excellent point.

We need rules for this. Comfy suggests it's a country if it's a UN member: I'd add it has to have been a country while you were there, and you have to have actually been to it (ie gone through immigration, or walked about after baggage claim if it's in Schengen), and not an airside transit lounge on its territory. Or got off the train and left the station.

Actually, if anything, I am deeply impressed and slightly envious. I would really like to hear what someone like you have to say so far as differences (beyond the poverty etc.... that we all know) between poorer countries and the western ones. I have a certain untested hypothesis about money and happiness/well being of a society that hinges on the preoccupation to forever want more versus having the time to not rush "stuff" and, but that is a topic for a future thread.

Yes, I agree with your rules that it is okay so far as it was a country when you visited, and that you have to go through customs and step outside (otherwise my own list becomes twice as long).

comfy and flanner...why is the UN the measure? they don't recognise taiwan and that is clearly a separate country.

Thanks for the advice about a post related to visiting US states. I'm new to this site and I forget that there are different forums. I will blame you for making me check into yet another forum...since I've been planning my Italy trip my house is a wreck and my filing is totally out of control.

so...based on your screen name...i need to buy new comfy shoes for my upcoming trip to Italy. I broke my foot last Mother's Day (not a bad time to visit the ER...got right in), and I was told the swelling in my foot would not completely go away for about 1 yr. So...still have shoes I can't wear...got any ideas on what I should buy for lots of walking in about 2 months?
