I am of Hungarian origin and can confirm that the o's in Fodor are pronounced the same as "boat" in English. I would say "Fo-dor" with emphasis on the first syllable. I can also confirm that there is no umlaut (two dots) over the o's.

Jahoulih: the surname "Schiavo" (which means "slave" in Italian) is pronounced SKIavo, not SKYavo.

How people choose to anglicize the pronunciation of their foreign last names is of course their business and their choice.

Spygirl: Maybe my transliteration was confusing. I was trying to indicate that the "i" in "schiavo" is pronounced consonantally. The word has two syllables, the first (which bears the accent) being "skya" (or /skja/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet), and the second being "vo." There is no vocalic "i" sound in the word.

How people anglicize their names is their business and their choice, but that doesn't mean I may not find their anglicizations aesthetically unappealing.
