How expensive is Mykonos, really?

Last year I spent 5 weeks in Crete and found it dirt cheap.

Beer was E80 cents for a big bottle, fast food (souvlaki/shwarma) was E2, wine was pennies, even restaurants didn't cost much and accomodations were E15-E25 per person for an appartment (or 30-50 for a room for 2)

Drinks at lounges/clubs were more pricey but still affordable (4-5 E per drink)

How expensive is Mykonos really compared to Crete? This year I'm definitely visiting Mykonos and Skiathos and would like to know.

Santorini last year was also not that expensive. Is Mykonos more expensive?

I think that accommodation costing in Santorini and Mykonos is similar. Both islands offer luxury hotels and some not so expensive.

I live on Mykonos and yes it is expensive if you buy from expensive shops that are in all places here and eat at restaurants that I would not use because they're cost to eat is crazy. They must make 500% profit in some of those places on each meal.

There are cheaper tavernas here but you need to know where to find them. I can help if you need to know them.

Also, time of year makes big difference. High season is very expensive in many places but you learn quickly not to go to them.

When are you travelling here and what is your lodging and food budget each day and I will try and give you suggestions.

I wonder Thanos if Joseph is still operating his small lunch bar/cafe just up from the Gold shop. He makes an apple cake to die for and other gourmet goodies that are great to take on a picnic lunch or back to your hotel. A good way to save some euros instead of eating out all the time.

Joanne,
Locals eat at home. And it is still expensive. Especially fresh fruit and vegetables. And fish. Friends even refuse my invitation to a restaurant, because the find it´s to expensive. So I go and buy the food for the amount I would have spend in a restaurant and we cook together. Think about the 500 % Thanos spoke about.

Please click on my name. I replied to another poster few days past about taverna suggestions. I hope it helps you.

Hello Kathy. Can you remember the name of the gold shop or it's location? If I know I will find out if he is still operating. Are you coming back to Mykonos again soon? I read milley leave a reply recently for you so then I read some of your postings and they are very accurate in what you say. Come back soon and visit us.

How are you Gaspard. When are you coming again to visit us? You are correct about eating out of home. We do not do it often as we have no need to leave our home to eat but sometimes friends visit and they want to eat at a restaurant. That's when I do not go to expensive places. I would not give them my family money as my wife cookings better food.

Kalimera Thanos, I would love to come back to Mykonos, I stayed with Christos and Marina in their pension on the hill with the red shutters. Constantina Zorz Xydakis. The view is a dream.
The Gold Store (name) is the one on the main town, Hora waterfront, there is a narrow walkway beside it going inland, Joseph's is about 40 metres back from the waterfront up the walkway.
Once you are smitten with Greece it will beckon you back many times and each time it becomes harder to leave.
How do we find you on Mykonos Thanos?

Best wishes from New Zealand

Kalinýchta Kathy. This is very strange as today I was in working at the School of Fine Art district (Scholi Kalon Technon) and close to where you stay. You have best views in all Mykonos. I do not know the owners as friends but I recognise them when I meet.

I wonder if your shop is Lithos Gold and Gem. You will know there are many along the harbour front but this is a large and famous store. Up to the right hand side of the store is a lane and here was a small cafe and bar. Turn to the right when there and there is small church and behind the church the newspaper shop that seels all newspares from the world. If I am guessing correctly then the small cafe/bar is now a lady dress store. It changed about 1 year ago.

Does my description of the location sound correctly?

Of course, Greek people here change there shops and stores. They do not close but move to another town place somewhere else. I will try and find out using the name of the person and will let you know if I am succesfl.

When you come back let me know here and if I am on the island you have meal with me and my family. This summer we take out baby to London for hospital ttreatment as this cannot be done Ok in Athens. Yet, at this time we do not know how long we will be away from our home but hope for only a few weeks. If we are here then you will eat with us. Yes?

You will second person from Fodors. I now know milley and her husband. They are good peoples and she tell me she is coming to see us again in the summer. We look forward to meetign with them again. We make sure to have lots of good fresh food for them too.

For nice hotels and restaurants, think Santorini prices (i.e. the prices you would pay if staying / eating with a caldera view) and you are on the right track. I found the two islands similar price-wise. Of course you will be able to find cheaper places if you go off the beaten track a little. Take up Thanos on his recommendation for restaurants - I found there were some great and some terrible restaurants on Mykonos so it's better to have an idea of where you want to eat rather than just take pot luck.

Of course I would love to meet your family next time I am on Mykonos and hopefully not too long to wait. Thank you. I also hope your little daughter is well again soon. I am waiting to see when Nana Mouskouri will be having her farewell concert in Athens next year but also a possibility of this year somewhere. It will be a big occasion for many of us and it's important to us to be there. I have been listening to her since I was 11 years old and also love Haris Alexiou, Marinella, Mario Frangoulis and Yanni Parios. Perhaps you like them all too. My email address is [email protected]
I am off to Canada next month to see Nana in concert again and to visit the USA, from there have to wait and see about dates but will keep in touch for sure.

Best wishes
Kathy

We booked a hotel on-line four months in advance for around $160 a night. When we got off the boat, a man was there with his car and he offered us a room for $35 a night with a private bathroom. He drove us to the motel and said, you can pay in the morning. He never took our names or password number before giving us the keys.

When we moved into the hotel we had booked the next day, the bathroom was so small you could use the toilet and shower at the same time. But I don't like to be rushed in the bathroom.

Moral of the story, don't book in advance unless it is the very high season.

Hi Wally

What time of the year was this and was it a motel style with kitchen facilities?

It was like a Motel 6. No restaurant or kitchen facilities. This was in Mid June. I would say High Season is the end of July and August.

We decided to not book the hotel the first night we arrived because we were taking the ferry and we knew we would not get into town until around midnight at the earliest. We took a risk and it paid off. There were lots of people down by the ferry when it pulled in offering places to stay.

Thanos, thank you for your reply.

I would definitely love to hear some suggestions as to what places/tavernas to eat and really cool authentic places to visit in Mykonos, rather than touristic places for Northern Europeans and Americans.

Send me an email if anything

gammarayentertainment [at] gmail.com

Thanks =)

Just got back from almost three weeks in Mykonos and Santorini. Found the value was better in Mykonos for your money. Every restaurant we went to gave us something extra that we did not pay for whether it was an extra litre of wine, two very large shots of Oozo, dessert and very often a lovely fruit plate as well. This did not happen in Santorini. As well our hotel in Mykonos was excellent and for the same price in Santorini, the hotel was not nearly as nice. Did not go to Crete so cant compare with the prices and value there.

hello irecommend

It is good to read you had nice time here. When did you leave the island?

Did you have the time with the students? It was very busy and this year they come for two weekends not just one.

I hope you missed our storms the weekend just ended.
