How do you communcate with others in your party when traveling?

When you are traveling, do you like to have a way to communicate in case you are separated from your party? I'm considering buying some two-way radios for use in Europe. Any recommendations or other ideas? Only one of our cell phones will work in Europe.

You need to check if your two way radios will be legal in Europe. I don't think the emergency services would be too pleased to have you on their frequency for instance.

We use our mobiles and text each other. Or just arrange a time and place to meet up and don't worry in the meantime.

I tried Google already, and I'm just coming up with companies that sell radios.

Just to confirm North American FRS and GPRS radios are illegal in Europe. http://tinyurl.com/yj6a5v

You would need to buy your radios in Europe. Alternatively buy a cheap mobile phone that will work in Europe, or buy a pay as you go phone once you get to Europe. They are generally very cheap with some money already loaded.

Same way everyone else does these days - cell phones. If only one of yours works in Europe, get another one that does, or buy one there.

Two-way radios are a no-no, if bought in the USA.

If not everyone has (or is willing to get) cell phones, I'd have a back-up plan in place that the group all agrees on... Everyone carries the business card of your hotel and enough cash for taxi fare, then if people are separated you all meet back at the hotel in the evening, for example. Or meet at XXX cafe in the area you are touring at 4pm or something like that.

For our last trip to Germany I puchased two used unlocked cell phones (very basic) from ebay. Then we bought the sim cards from vodafone in the first town we were staying in. This allowed us to keep in touch with each other and to call ahead to friends and family we were staying with as we travelled. We had to add minutes to one of the phones towards the end of our trip.

The total cost for the phones, sims and minutes was around $150 for three weeks worth of use, and we still have the phones for our next trip.

As of last week, a "pack", (cell phone, sim card and 12 or 15 euros talkng minutes) was 19 euros. so.. very small investment.

This one was bought at a large department store in their cell phone department. Moble phone cmpanies also have small shops scattered around the cities.

I doubt the airports will have these specials.

Unless you're traveling with children, I agree with the consistently practical advice of suze. Make sure everyone knows how to use the metro.
Set up times to meet and be there.

We use T-Mobile and it works just fine.
