what have you heard? Have you been to Europe before? Why would American girls be treated any particular way in N. Ireland?

Do you have any specific worries/concerns? How would you expect them to be "treated". (I was going to respond w/ a smart a$$ answer --but looking at your other posts it looks like you are serious)

(BTW -- NI is part of the UK so I've contacted the editors to re-tag your post and add the UK)

I think you need to explain what your concerns are. N. Ireland is a 1st world country. What is it that you are worried about in particular? You need to give us some guidance here...

I really dont think you have to be worried about that unless you give people are reason to talk down to you (perhaps get horribly drunk or be disrespectful etc). Just treat people with the same respect you expect and you should be fine.

It really is like asking what it is like for Irish girls in your state. It shouldnt be an issue.

Hey--my reaction (and I'm an American woman) was the same as Alan's. You get what you give.

I was with a group in Ireland where one of the American men in our party was giving the waitress attitude. She verbally sliced, diced, and minced him with three sentences. He never knew what hit him.

The rest of us in the party roared with approval and bought rounds for the house, thus sealing Irish/American relationships in that pub for awhile despite his miserable soul.

So my assumption is that the person(s) who told you Americans were getting talked down in Ireland not only had/have some basic 'tude problems but must also be too stupid to realize the consequences of actions.

From your other thread, I assume we're talking about 18 year olds - in which case, I can only say boys will be boys and boors will be boors anywhere in the world. If your young ladies are used to putting them in their place in the US, I don't see why Northern Ireland should be any different.

I haven't heard anything about Ireland or N. Ireland but let's not act like this is an insane question. there are countries in the world where the locals treat American young women (or any woman) differently, and I've been in one of them -- Egypt. They think Am women deserve to be treated like prostitues, they believe all Am women are like some very bad soap opera/TV shows (which they view), etc. There are other countries with strong anti-American sentiment, also, which is a different thing.

So if you don't want a lot of PC answers acting like you are insane, maybe go to another board that will be more straightforward and is geared to young people who probably are better equipped to answer realistically. try www.eurotrip.com

Christina -- oh come on. No one said the OP is insane. That was your description. And why bring up Egypt and hookers which have so much to do w/ the OP's question (?). We asked what her concerns were and its pretty clear Belfastbound understood everyone's responses and 'gets it'.

I have to say I thought this thread stayed much more PC than it could have. I thought most answers were fine and were meant in a PC way.

I hardly think you can compare Egypt or any muslim country to N. Ireland! And who said anyone was insane, other than you?

This is a new equation for me. Hmmm. Ireland = Egypt! Hope I get to be in the pub when you state that one, Christina.

And I'm not going to buy rounds to smooth that one over.
