Hotels in Paris-Caron de Beaumarchais
We are beginning to plan a Paris and So France trip for next Fall. The last time we were in Paris we rented an apartment which we may still do. However, we are also considering a three star hotel. Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais in the Marais looks good and the Beaumarchais near Rue Oberkampf sounds interesting. Any comments on either? When we rented for 2 weeks it was in the Oberkampf area which we loved! But, we are also fans of the Marais. Any other hotel tips would be appreciated.

I've posted here before about Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais, but I know the search engine hasn't been that reliable lately.
We loved the location. Although my highest coefficient in Paris hotel value has in the past been "number of steps to Metro stop," such proximity wasn't that much of a criteria with the Caron de B. It just seemed that we were spitting distance from everywhere we really wanted to go.
But, but, but...we had the largest rooms in the hotel--and they were still small even by our Parisian standards. The bathroom was really small. Storage space in general was teeny (thank goodness we only use carryons--that helped with floor space).
If you read the reviews by some guidebooks, they'll talk about how even though the hotel is a 3-star, it provides bathrobe and then talks about vase of flowers.
Well, let's have a reality check--the bathrobe is scratchy, it takes up hook space in a space-compromised area, and the flowers are dried.
Does that mean I wouldn't stay there again? I would go back in a heartbeat. The owner is terribly kind and thoughtful and we loved stepping out the door to life that wasn't just a tourist parade.

i was in the Caron last month.
and while i must say that to me, as single, the room was nice and comfortable, i did understand the comments about the size. two persons with two suitcases could feel cramped.
but, the location is superb. the breakfast delicious, and Allen and the others friendly and helpfull.

Pam I've been keeping notes on Paris hotels from posts here. I noted the Caron de Beaumarchais as being described as "elegant but with very small rooms". One apt/hotel that I noted with big rooms (only 11 units) is Residence des Arts on rue Git le Coeur in the 6th south of Notre Dame.
