Hotels & Areas in Rome

Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice on places and areas to stay in Rome. The information I've been reading on the internet is overwhelming! My husband and I will be there for about 5-6 days in the fall.

So many to choose from, look for a nice
boutique hotel around the Pantheon area because of location.
Never stay at the Quirinal Hotel!!!(Hotel Quirinal). It advertises special prices to lure you to what you think is a 4 star hotel that has been refurbished and even has beautiful pictures. Be warned, it is a DUMP that may have 1 floor of nice refurbished rooms and a pretty lobby but the room you'll get will be so gross and nasty. Once you've reserved you can't get out of it and they don't care that you're not satisified.
All that said most of the smaller quaint hotels in the older part of Rome are nice. Don't forget if traveling for the first time to Italy, hotel rooms are not like those in US or other countries. For the most part they are very small, and the air conditioning is not the same Just remember you're in Rome and most of your time is spent out and about.

Your post sounds like one of my first posts when I was planning Rome.

You really do need to post your budget.

Here are the areas as I know them:

Camp de Fiori - Great area. Busy, young, close to stuff. Very old, historic.

Trastevere - Slightly less touristy, a tiny off the beaten path, lots of restaurants and locals. Accomodations might be more mixed.

Piazza Navona and Pantheon - Most recommended areas (although Campo is still my first choice). Dead smack in the middle of the historic center.

Spanish Steps - I don't really get this area. Still close to the action.

Via Venetto - The "fanciest" and most modern (realtively speaking!!) part of town. Too "business-y" feeling for my taste.

Vatican - I'd only consider staying there if all I was going to Rome for was to see the Vatican. It's just too off the beaten path.

Other areas that I wouldn't stay in: Coloseum, Termini.

Of course, other people will have different ideas.

We rented an apartment when we were there because we had our kids. If I went back with just my husband, we'd probably stay in a hotel and Ponte Sisto would be my first choice.

Check out hotel reviews on here and tripadvisor.com.

Thanks w for the information on the different areas. We don't want to break the bank but also don't want to stay in a dump. So, around $150 per night. Is that reasonable?

Have you used the search feature on this site? Read the "Destinations" section on Rome? This question gets asked and answered practically everyday!

i don't know that much about the various hotels. Go to the Destinations thing on here and sort the hotels by "Price." Also do a search on here for "hotels Rome." Also go to tripadvisor.com and look for hotels by price range. Venere.com is also very user friendly. Go to Rome on there. They list hotels by region and they have an easy map.

If you do enough cross-checking you'll find some good choices. $150 might be a little low, but maybe not.
