Gratuitous plug for Smeraldo--just stayed there in Rome two weeks ago and could not have been happier with it. Room was clean (no smoke smell anywhere), breakfast was good, staff very friendly and helpful--the even sell bus tickets at the desk which is much nicer than trying to convince a Tabacchi to sell you one.

Nicegirl, tell me about the hotel, are there better rooms than others? What floor did you stay on, how much was your room? Anything I should know. we are going in May.

I also stayed at Smeraldo a few years ago but just got back from an Italy trip with 6 nights in Rome and had an apartment in Trastevere (just a short walk from Smeraldo)with a wonderful terrace and washing machine for the same price as a room in Smeraldo.
