Hotel Santa Maria in Rome--Rick Steves discount?

I'm getting ready to make reservations for our next Italy trip (woohoo!). I think I remember reading here somewhere that you can get a significant discount at Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere by mentioning Rick Steves. Am I dreaming?

Aha! I found it myself:

Message: Just some information I came across when booking my hotels -- Hotel Santa Maria gives a sizeable discount if you ask for Rick Steve's discount when booking. It is 155 euros instead of 207, and I believe they require you to present his book to them at check-in.

Jocelyn, A 25% discount is substantial. I quickly read the comments on Trip Advisor, and they are all good. I will definitely add Santa Maria Albergo's web page to my "Favorites."

Thank you for this information.

I will guess the discount is true. I recall getting a discount (a few years ago) at a hotel in Bath, England mentioning Rick Steves. I'm pretty sure you have to show his guidebook.

I'll be there for a couple of nights in June. I've emailed the hotel and I'll let you all know how they respond.

Jocelyn -- We didn't end up staying at Hotel Santa Maria (but we did check it out while we were there and it is very lovely & in a great location!), but they did offer us the discount when I mentioned that I saw the discount in Rick Steve's book. They said they required me to show them R.S.'s book upon checking-in, and that payment must be in cash rather than credit card.

Jocelyn

I stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen in Feb. and when I made the reservation I mentioned I had his book. I brought the book with me to Rome, but they never asked to see it. I got nearly 30% off. Instead of paying 82 E I paid 58. The discount is good for select months. It is a nice hotel centrally located (10 min walk from the Termini). I usually stay at B&B's but I would stay there again.

Santa Maria's response included this:

"If you pay cash you'll receive a 7% discount

Note: We cannot grant any additional discount for this period which is high
season"

I'm going in June. BTW, the going rate is now 210E.

I just heard from them for July 2005. The Rick Steves discount is 165 Euro vs. regular price of 210. You have to pay cash and show the book.

Nancy,

Really??? I guess I should have pressed. I assumed "no additional discounts" included the Rick Steves discount. I already reserved a room at Villa della Fonte and don't really feel like changing it now. Thanks for letting me know, though.

I think you should have mentioned the Rick Steves discount by name to make sure. However, it is also possible July is not high season any more, whereas June is, and that's the reason. I know that is true for a lot of Paris hotels (at least, end of July), but I don't know about Rome.

I booked Santa Maria for Oct. 2005. Nancy is correct. Regular rate of 210 euros is discounted to 165 euros. We must bring the book and pay in cash. Only 50 weeks to go.

Do you have to bring the 2005 book, or will an '03 or '04 work? Just asking because we are taking another trip to Italy in May 2005 and we currently have the 2003 and 2004 Rick Steve's books and I hate to buy another!
