Hotel Navona
Have 4 nights booked at Hotel Navona, which Frommer's recommended. However, while I have read mostly good reviews, the negative ones are concerning me. Anyone with first hand experience staying at this hotel? I owuld be willing to change if I can.
Thanks

I stayed there in 1999 for I think 8 nights. It was a pleasant stay as far as the accommodations themselves go, and the location can't be beat. But that WAS a long time ago, so how the rooms are now I couldn't tell you.
I did have a negative experience as far as the reservation went. I booked about 3 months or so in advance by fax (they didn't have email back then), so I had a written confirmation. I faxed again to reconfirm about 2 weeks before my trip (they faxed back and said all was well), then I called from Venice the day before to tell them when I'd be arriving (which as I recall they'd asked me to do). Everything seemed fine. Until I showed up. Then my reservation mysteriously could not be found. Well, needless to say I raised a fair ruckus, showed my fax, said that y-day I talked to so-and-so on the phone, etc. etc. The elderly gentleman (who may have been the owner, not sure) at the desk took his pencil and ERASED somebody else's reservation from the ledger to put mine back in. So somebody else that day showed up to find no reservation. Why I got erased in the first place, I have no idea.
I personally have not chosen to stay there again because I worried I could not trust them, and I don't need that hassle.

I just looked at their website out of curiosity. They must have renovated or something, because those rooms pictured look nothing like what I remember. I had a single that was half the size of the one in the picture.
Their prices are also twice what they were in 1999. I wouldn't pay what they charge now, based on my memory of the place.
There are a lot of bad reviews on tripadvisor: did you find those already?

Yes I saw the negative reviews but it was after I booked (and thery charged my credit card for one nite's stay). This hotel was recommended in Frommers, although i do not have a lot of confidence in their opinions now. Most reviews were acceptable but again the negative ones concerned me. I may wind up switching and I guess you do get what you pay for. I just do not want to take a chance with my wife and 2 daughters that far away from home.
