Hotel Louis II or Hotel St. Germain de Pres, Paris 6th

I prefer the 6th dist. Both of these hotels look nice, but which one is better?

Or are there others that are just as nice (e.g. spacious enough rooms and charm, etc.) that offer good low season rates?

I have stayed at the Louis II three times in the last five years. The staff has always been friendly and helpful with good English skills(I think they enjoy it when you try a little French).
The rooms are standard Paris small but I think the bathrooms are better than most.Larger with marble counters and nice amenities.
There are two large attic rooms (22 and 23 I think) that are very nice. The lobby is large and well decorated for a small hotel.
Location is great for me. Very close to Odeon metro and St.Germain. Also very close to Rue Buci with wonderful food shopping.

Did you stay at the Hotel Louis II? Please let me know how it was. I love the Odeon area and it looks like a great deal.

Some people have commented that Hotel Louis II is too expensive for the value. Do a search here for the hotel's name. I believe I read the comments here or at tripadvisor.com. There are lots of nicer hotels in the 6th dist., many examples given here almost daily (type "Paris and hotels" in the search box).

I stayed at Hotel Verneuil last spring. It is in the 7th arr., but right on the border of the 6th (we spent most of our time in the 6th while at this hotel.)

I found the rooms small, but very attractive with very clean, modern bathrooms. The staff was wonderful -- they confirmed all our restaurant reservations for us & gave me a box of chocolates as a gift for my pregnancy (I guess they thought chocolate was good for the baby! It must have worked because he is definitely the sweetest thing.)
Breakfast was pricey, so we went to a nearby coffee shop daily (preferred this anyway for the people-watching.) We had a room facing the street, but it wasn't very noisy -- there didn't seem to be a lot of traffic on that street.

I learned about hotel verneuil through a friend who freelances for Travel & Leisure. She told me many of the editors there prefer this hotel when traveling on their own dime. Another friend of mine always stays at the Buci Latin (aka Artus hotel) & loves it. It looks very cool, but I preferred the charm of the verneuil.

Awbaker, I'm glad you mentioned Hotel Verneuil. I stayed there just last month. Everything you mentioned about their rooms and bathrooms is how I feel also. The standard double rooms are much smaller than the deluxe double rooms (I booked a std. for myself/deluxe for my aunt). The breakfast is overpriced but because of low season I got in included in the room rates.
I'm glad you mentioned the box of chocolates you were given for your pregnancy. When I was there it was we arrived on Friday, Feb. 13th (not unlucky at the Verneuil). So the following day being Valentine's Day, my aunt and I had gone out to dinner, returning to our rooms to find a heart-shaped box of chocolates with a note from Mme. de Lattre, the owner. I think reception actually wrote the note for Mme. de Lattre, but it was an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
I can understand why the T&L staff stays there on their own. It's a great place that gives guests personal attention. Plus the accomodations are excellent. If the deluxe room won't be too cramped with a second bed (as a triple room) I'd definitely consider staying here when I return with my family.
P.S. Congratulations on your sweet baby boy!

francophile03 -- I wondered if you were going to stay there after asking me about it last month. So glad you had a good stay there, too. Any hotel which gives me chocolate is a winner in my book. We also stayed in the standard room -- we wanted to save our money for good restaurants. My in-laws were hoping to stay there in October, but they will be in Paris for 2 weeks, so want to spend about E120/nt rather than E150/nt. They are looking at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the 4th arr. -- had a recommendation from a friend. It also looks quite charming. I hope you write a trip report!

Thanks awbaker! And I'm sorry, I didn't recall I'd checked with you about the Verneuil. I'm not good at writing reports much more trip reports. Plus it wouldn't be as interesting as other reports here.

I can understand why your in-laws want to stay at Grandes Ecoles especially with a 30 euro/day difference in rates.
But it's a different type of charm there as compared with Verneuil the way it looks in pictures-more lace and florals. By the way I thought Verneuil's standard double rooms cost 145 euro, not 150 euro-have the rates increased?

franco -- you're right, the rates are E145. I remembered it incorrectly. I think the standard room will be too small for them, if they are staying 2 weeks, though. What do you think?

Yes, for 2 weeks, you could be right, the standard room may be too claustrophobic. My room I could put up with it by myself. It was like you open the door and there's your bed, right? I think if it were my husband and myself, I wouldn't mind, but I think my husband would get on my case for reserving a room that small. The deluxe would be great but it's 45 euros more! I see your predicament where your in-laws are concerned; do you think they'll mind the cramped quarters of the standard room? If not, then that's the only problem as there's no problem with the hotel otherwise and the location is one of the best!

And I wonder if the hotel can give a slight discount or possibly have breakfast offered free since it'll be a 2 week stay?
