Provence without a Car- Please help!

A friend and I are flying into Paris, spending a few days there (at the beginning or end, doesnt matter to us), and a few days in Provence. What city or cities should we base ourselves in? Ive heard St Remy and Aix are great... can you get to those from Paris without a car? My friend loves to bike- anyone who can recommend Provence biking tours as well?
Please reply!
Thanks!!!

without a car, I favor Avignon where I was for over two weeks one year without a car. There are several threads on this if you try the search engine.
Everyone has their favorite choice.

I second Avignon. It's roughly in the center of Provence, very good in-and-out transportation access and lively enough to hang around in.

How about Nice? It's beautiful, and there's a lot to do. You could fly back to Paris from the big airport there.

It sounds as though you don't especially like large cities; so you probably wouldn't like Aix either. Or Arles, for that matter. The problem is that staying outside a large city without a car really limits your options for lovely small towns and villages, such as those in the Lubéron.

You might be able to get by in St.-Rémy with just bikes, as some of the local sights aren't very far. A few weeks ago we had a post from a guy who wanted to base himself in St.-Rémy and get around by bus, and that proved very impractical and difficult; to get most places he wanted to visit, he would have had to take a bus from St.-Rémy to Avignon and then wait for another bus, and then another to get to his final destination. It's difficult unless you're somewhere with good train connections, which is why I had suggested Nice.

Judging from the map on viamichelin.com, you shoudl probably consider stopping for lunch somewhere on the far side of Milan.

Sorry! That post was actually in reply to a different questioner.
