Well, it's easy enough to get around Rome by cab if you have trouble walking. And the fare is minimal within the historic center. Not sure why you want to be close to the Spanish Steps ( a notorious hangout for teens) or the Trevi Fountain - which is attractive enough but nothing compared to major sights like the Colosseum, Form, Borghese, Vatican etc.

Sorry, but I don't know why one WOULDN'T want to stay near the Spanish Steps with the beautiful Via Margutta, world-class shopping, the Piazza Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens nearby.

An affordable hotel that gets rave reviews and is within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps is the Hotel Modigliani on the Via Purificazione.

If money is no object, then stay at the Hotel de Russie along with the rest of the international jet set.

Waggie888, if you arrange to stay somewhere close to the Corso Vittorio Emmanuele (aka Il Corso) you will be able to take a lot of buses to go to most of the famous sights. It runs from the bridge between the Vatican and Castel St. Angelo all the way down almost to the Roman Forum (although it turns into Via Plebesito and the Via 4 Novembre as it gets near the forums.).
