I don't know what qwovadis means talking about apartment scams, dumps, expensive, etc. (he must have had a bad experience somewhere along the line, probably because he always tried to book extra cheap places.)
We have been to Italy about 12 times and have stayed in 2 or 3 apartments almost every time. We have only had two that were disappointments. If you look at reviews on TripAdvisor or SlowTrav.com, you can find out what other people thought. In fact, I would always stay in a place that has had good reviews.

charnees - The post removed above qwovadis was an advertiser for an apartment. I reported them. My last stay in Florence was in the apartment patf is renting which was cheaper and nicer than hotels at that price point. I based my decision to rent on TedGale's multiple reviews of it.

I have the perfect spot for you! I absolutely loved Il Villino! My husband and I took our 3 daughters last spring! We had a great spot! Very anassuming location. You walk throught the first door and into this lovely little hideaway. Florence is one of my all time favorite places in Italy. The owners of Il Villino were wonderful. They recommended some restaurants that included our best meals in Italy. Our accomodations included a room right off the garden. A room for our 3 daughters...very nice size and a separate room for us. Cool place! Lovely breakfast. Internet access. Can't recommend it enough...

Thank you all for your advice---now we would like to take a day trip from Florence to Rome. Grayline has one but does not go to the Vatican. Any others that someone has used that does?

You can easily take the train. It only takes 90 minutes.
If you want a tour company, CAF Tours should have several to Rome. You can also check with the Florence Tourist Board as they have a list.
