Is Az530 going to come back to this post? I'm always wary of these kinds of one hit comments. This is a guess but I think this may have been his first trip to Italy and expected things to be the same as 5*'s at home. I'd like to be proven wrong though

Travelwifey is right - a 5-star hotel in NA may be different from a 5-star hotel in Europe. az530 said " there was no (made) to order omelets ... no dessert ... in the buffet breakfast". Maybe in Italy they just don't do made-to-order omelets??
A few years ago we stayed at the Grand Hotel Iles Borromees in Stresa, Italy - also a 5-star hotel. There was no "made-to-oder omelets" or desserts either. But we thought that was one of the best hotel buffet breakfast with the choices of cheeses, fresh fruits, bread and pastries, cold cuts etc. etc.
In NA, reception staffs are well trained to say "welcome to our hotel", or "Thank you for staying at our hotel, please come again" (OK, not all hotels staff say that). But in Europe there are generally less smiling or greeting guests by their names. A cultural difference??

Off subject slightly.. but we dined at Le Manoir about 8 yrs ago and I will never forget it... if you can go, go.
We did not stay there, but after sightseeing all day, we brought our dinner attire with us and they gave us one of the rooms to change in and shower; the room was extraordinary.
The meal was so memorable as was taking our aperitifs in the garden then dessert in the library.
It was perfect!
And now to the OP... yes, I wondered what happened to him returning here. I never stayed at Danieli( been inside but never lodged), but some of the comments the OP makes IMHO really does not make the Danieli an awful place.
While the thanking is certainly nice; sometimes it just does not happen at hotels in Europe. And made to order omelettes at a buffet... well.. i wouldn't hold it against them.
We usually always stay pretty high end, in most cases, the most famous and grand hotel of the place we are visiting( we just like to do this, we did not stay at Danieli, but Bauer). We've never had a bad stay; in fact they are usually glorious.
I personally would be more upset if the rooms were ugly or really tired; to us that is the most important thing; the comfort and eye appeal of the room. Or if I requested something to room and it never came or took hours to come. Or if the staff were just downright rude ( to me the OP is describing a lack of warmth, which IMO is different than rudeness). The OP does not seem to have any complaints about the actual room.
And I have had many a runny egg in Italy.. I think it might come with the territory; I usually just find something else to eat.
In any event, though , the Danieli did not live up to the expectations of the OP and they were the OP's expectations, so I can see where the OP would be upset.
Better luck next time!

we stayed at an expensive hotel and on arrival were told to move our cheap hire car out of a space in front of the hotel to the back. Five minutes later a Jaguar ...was waved into our space -<
I would have moved my car alright, to another hotel.

We weren't greeted at the Danieli once but it didn't make any difference to us, again it was chocked up to a cultural difference. When we asked for our room key the staff was always polite. The interior of the hotel is amazing as well as the rooms. The were antique in design and not modern, again this may bother someone if they were used to brand new at home.
Finally I think the op is disappointed that he paid so much. 732 euros is not a lot to some European travelers and the extra currency loss may have been bothersome. Regarding the food, as I said our eggs were runny everywhere we stayed, it had nothing to do with the specific hotel...I agree Johnmange, we'll see if the op returns. Happy travels
On a side note I stay away from AMEX Platinum hotel reservations as yu generally have to book a rate higher than standard to get the "free" breakfast. Also I asked if the hotel was also booked by the cruise line as the cruise line buys a bulk of rooms and then resells to the passenger often at a higher rate than going direct. Also cruise line passengers may get the less desirable rooms because they are sold to the cl at a cheaper price.

OK ~ HERE IS SUGGESTION ABOUT THE DANIELI. At the end of the day, go up to the top floor bar and order a drink. Walk to the outwide wall. It is a fabulous view of the grand canal with the ships, etc. leaving. Absolutely a beautiful experience for very little money. Also, instead of staying at Daneieli, stay at Accademia.
