Honeymoon in Italy- Lake Como??

We'd like to take our honeymoon in Italy for 10 days in September. I've never been to the Lake Region- is it a good spot for a honeymoon? What is there to do and how long should we stay? It looks like we would fly in and out of Milan (I'm not a fan of Milan). Can we also take a trip to Florence? Would it be too daring to fit Venice in there? I've been to both but my husband-to-be has never been to Italy.

So maybe an itnerary of- fly in and out of Milan- go to Venice for 2 days, Florence 2 days, and Lake Como for 5?

Is this a good way to spend a honeymoon in Italy? I'm open to all suggestions.
Thanks for your advice!!!

Stacy,

I would pick Venice and the lake region, and leave Florence for another time. This way, you'll have the days you need to really enjoy the beauty of each area without having to rush through everything and travel quite a bit to get back and forth.(Just to give you an idea of distances, Milan is a three hour train ride or about a four hour drive from Venice) I also would find out about the possiblity of flying into Venice and out of Milan. This will save you travel time and backtracking. From the East Coast, I think Delta flies into Venice, or you could fly to London and connect from there. Good luck and congratulations!

Absolutely do Lake Como! It is the most romantic spot on earth. We stayed in Varenna, which oozes charm and is cozy and quiet, but I'm sure the other lakeside towns are equally wonderful. Sounds like a dream honeymoon - congratulations!!!

Congrats! We are going to Italy on our honeymoon also! After researching and following this board Lake Como is definitely on the list. It is for relaxing and romance vs. musuems and culture from what I have read. I think it will be our first stop to decompress from the plane ride and gear up for some touring! Depending on what you like to do and how you like to travel I think you can easily do Lake Como, Venice and Florence in 10 days. You can hit Padua and Verona off the train from Milan to Venice also.

I've recommened Lake Como as a honeymoon spot often. Think it's just about perfect. Agree with Wendy that you should do Venice and the Lakes without trying to add Florence into the mix. We like Menaggio as a place to stay on Como but Bellagio and Varenna are also nice and all three are linked by ferry. Hard to say how to divide the time. I'd say at least 3 days in Venice probably even 4, then either all on Como or divide three on Como and three on one of the other lakes. If you do 3 and 3 the other lake I'd recommend is Orta. It's the smallest of the major lakes (Iseo is smaller yet but doesn't have as much going for it IMO) but is easily accessible to Maggiore for day tripping and is incomparable for atmosphere. I think its' Bob the Navigator who extols the virtues of the place best. Do a search on Orta and you can read some of his near poetic descriptions of the place. He likes Albergo Orta right on the square for accommodations and it it lovely, nostalgic, etc. but a little crumbly. If that's off-putting to you consider the alternative of the San Rocco, a larger property with lovely pool as well as lake swimming. Each time we've been there there have been local weddings in progress with receptions there so it's an obvious choice for honeymoons. While your on Como be sure to have lunch at Isola Comacina. Do a search on that and you'll see my descriptions of one of the most fabulous food experiences anyone could have.

Stacy, The Lakes of Italy are really 3 destinations, and you will have time for 2 of them, plus Venice or Florence but not both. I would start or end at Orta, and include Como at the other end, unless you can fly out of Venice.
Orta is only :45 from Malpensa airport and is a magical romantic place. Sep is a good time to go. Holler if you need more specifics.

Lakes are SO romantic they are sure to bring out the best in you and your mate. Best love making ever in our marriage was on our hotel balcony in Como overlooking the lake, under the moon, naked on the balcony and wow was it great. Something about that lake region that just makes you HOT.

We went on our honeymoon to Italy in October and flew by into Venice after a stop in France. We spent three days in Venice and rented a car and drove to Bellagio on Lake Como. We then spent three days there and flew out of Milan. If I were to do it again and could only go to the same two places I would have spent more time in Venice. Bellagio was very romantic, my husband is picky and he LOVED Bellagio. We stayed at the Hotel Silvio just outside Bellagio and had a little balcony looking over the lake. Great restaurant.

Definatly check out or stay in Varenna. My husband and I found this town on a motorcycle trip around the area in September 2001. It is beautiful!

My wife and i did our honeymoon in Italy
in 1993.Been two more times since and currently planning 10th anniversary trip.
If your husband has never been to Italy,as corny as it may sound I recommend the "big three" Rome,Venice and Venice save lakes for other trip.Fly into either rome or venice and out the other city to save time.
If your ten days includes flying days you really only have 8 days,I might only go to Florence and Venice.I think that Venice is the most romantic city,as for the lakes if you really want to go Orta by far is the best.We drove through the whole lake region and oly enjoyed lake orta.
