Hi Maudie---I think your plan to stay in Brienz instead of "in the mountains" is perfect for early June, when you are going. And I'm curious about your time Bergen before that---will you be in Norway for the 17 May celebrations?

Hi Enzian, how are you?
Glad to hear I made the right choice!
And please do tell about May 17 in Norway, we will be travelling from London to Bergen that day and taking off on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage that night for the round trip.

Hi Maudie---
17 May ("Syttende Mai" in Norwegian) is Norway's national holiday, commemorating the adoption of their constitution in 1814. Everyone dresses up---many of the women and some of the men wear the Bunad, or traditional costume of each region. Even the cars are decorated with greenery and Norwegian flags. There is a parade of children, and then people go out to eat with friends. In Oslo there are fireworks at midnight, but I don't remember if Bergen has them. Maybe the celebration is similar to your Australia Day?
You might miss the parade, which is in the morning, but hopefully you will arrive in time to enjoy some of the other festivities before you board your ship. The harbor and Bryggen area are in the center of it all---one year there was a street fair, and a crane offering bungee-jumping.

Hi Maudie,
I am at work now which does not allow me to directly access the site that I used, but it can be found at www.alpenregion.ch
site 'Unterkuenfte', then 'Brienz'.
Suche nach Ferienwohnungen....You put your preferences for minimal # of stars, departure, arrival dates, # of guests, desired amenities and such, then a tailored list of properties comes up for review. By clicking on the named B&Bs, pictures and more specific info can be found. I think that when you get to each listing's site, it can be translated THEN into english for review. (I speak german)
I am blanking just now on the apt that I used, but it had one large bedroom and a second, much smaller back bedroom with only a twin bed, so it wouldn't suit your purposes....I travelled alone, so it was perfect for me, especially the long front balcony overlooking the lake (I was in a higher residential district, less than ten minutes from the RR).
Whichever you choose, I don't believe that you can go wrong in Brienz (did I mention that I named my female german shepherd Brienz!!!)?

Enzian,
That sounds great so I hope we do get to enjoy some of the festivities, just like we do on Australia day, your are right. I looked up the Norwegian website after reading your post. What a piece of luck then for us.
Rachel, yes it was the balcony on the house that won us over too. The one at Al Porto didn't appear to have any sitting room and when I saw the Chalet Rothorn I just knew it was for us. Sitting there with a glass of wine after a pleasant day, perfect!
What a great name for your dog.
Thanks everyone for your kind suggestions.
