Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor

Can anyone please comment on the location of the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor hotel? Is it well located relative to the city's attractions and landmarks? How is the nightlife in the immediate vicinity of this hotel?

Thank you.

WEll, it's all relative. It's about 15 to 20 minutes walk from the West End of Princes Street, so, given Edinburgh is a small city, it's well off centre.

In the immediate (by which I mean 50 yards, or even Grosvenor Street, vicinity of this hotel, there's no nightlife. There's an Indian Restaurant at the end of the street, and a few pubs at the crossroads. That would be it.

It's not a bad ee hotel, if a little jaded.

I'd be slightly less negative than Sheila. I'd say it's only a 10 minute walk to the west end of Princes St or to the start of Lothian Rd where you can pick up the open top bus tour. If you are young & mad, Lothian Road is full of nightlife; and the Usher Hall, the Traverse theatre & the Lyceum theatre are all right next to Lothian Road. I believe there's a casino on Grosvenor Street, but no idea what it's like. You can walk to a few quite nice restaurants from the hotel, including the Caley Ale House (pub with 'modern Scottish' restaurant upstairs), La Bruschetta & La Partenope. One of the main bus routes passes the end of the street. In sum, I'd say it's not a bad location.

Thanks Sheila and Caroline.

I am depressed by hotel prices in Edinburgh. My wife and I are planning a trip to the UK for the end of July, and I thought that London hotels were expensive. After preliminary looking at Edinburgh prices I realized that London accommodations are almost free.

Can someone please suggest a well-located hotel in Edinburgh under 100 pounds/night?

Thank you.

I'd recommend the Hotel Ibis in Hunter Square where I've stayed twice if you're looking for a place under £100 - the location can't be beat - it's right on the Royal Mile - and the prices are around £50-£70 depending on the season. But book ASAP if you're going in July - that's getting close to Festival time when everything will be booked solid. Ibis is not fancy but clean, convenient, economical and like I said, in a prime location.

Agree 100% with Daisy - I always recommend the Ibis for reasonably priced accommodation. If that's full try one of the Travel Inns or Travel Lodges. As Daisy correctly points out, that is getting towards festival time so will be very booked up. Failing these ideas, just ring the tourist office & take what you can get. Or consider staying in Glasgow - the Travel Inn on George Street is OK & only 5 mins walk from Queen Street station, whence trains depart for Edinburgh every 15 mins during the day & every 30 mins in the evening, taking c.50 mins.

Thanks folks,

Unfortunately the two Accor hotels in Edinburgh (Novotel & Ibis) are sold out when we'll be there. Will keep looking...

Ther's a good Travel Inn in Morrison Street which is somewhat closer to Lothian Road than Grosvenor Street.
There is a place called the Grassmarket hotel in, oddly, the Grassmarket, which is, I think, a premier Inn. On the other side of the street there are two Apexes, which don't have a cheap rack rate(but bound to be cheaper than any Hilton), but which DO have deals on quite a lot. The grassmarket would be a good location.

There's a new Express by Holiday Inn in Picardy place which is off centre on the other side.

Part of Edinburgh being a small city means that it's never far to anywhere.

Caroline and sheila have given you lots of good ideas - I won't even suggest my favorite B&B which is in the very center - because it is usually totally booked all of July/August.

But just a question - you say your UK trip is the end of July -- does that slip into early August? My reason for asking is that July is sometimes difficult in Edinburgh - but August is always VERY difficult. Many people book their hotels a year ahead for August.

What are your dates? And are you visiting other areas/London before or after Edinburgh. If the Edinburgh bit was earlier in the itinerary (thus farther away from August/the festivals) maybe it would be a bit easier to find something . . . . .
