Schuler - since when is it "Jungfraujoooch"? It isn't and has never been.

Hi Quokka,

I found this video where the speaker says "Jungfraujoch." It's a long "o" said relatively quickly.

hi, wrenwood,

emergency fixed - finally.

back to the german pronounciation.

skimming this board, I don't think that anyone has yet told you that there is an "umlaut" on the "a" of "mannlichen" thus altering the sound to an "e" as in "men".

and that "jungfraujoch" has a SHORT "o" just as in "loch". [in fact, JUST as in loch, including the "ch" sound on the end].

hope this helps [and apolgies if I have relicated information others have already given].

regards, ann

I give up

I think I'll stick to fondue (fawn-due)! (at least that's how I pronounce it, lol!)

Ok, I'm confused.

A short "o" for me sounds like hot, got, shot and rot.

A long "o" (for me) sounds like hope, joke and poke.

I agree that loch and joch rhyme.

A yo-yo on the JungfrauYOch.

hi, kopp,

please don't give up - it's easy.

"jung" is pronounced as in "Karl Jung" [friend of Freud], "frau" as in "ow, that hurts", and "joch" as in "loch" but with a "y" at the beginning.

regards, ann
