I need opinions & advice...

We have accomodations reserved for 4 nights/3 days in San Gimignano in about 2 weeks. We have made plans to meet up with someone who lives in Orvieto and they are highly suggesting against staying in San G. as they say the transportation makes it more work than it is worth (we were planning to take some day trips from San G.). One of our nights in San G. is non refundable so they are saying we should just stay in Siena the rest of the time (3 nights/2 days) to make it more convenient...

What do you say?

And if so, does anyone know of anywhere we can even stay that will have availability at the end of May for under 70 Euros a night for 2 people? I've checked venere.com but I'm not coming up with much.

Nothing i can give you for under 70 but i agree that you should stay in Siena and commute from there. that would be easier in my opinion.

Are you staying in the town?
Will you have a car? If not, San Gim. is not a good place to base yourself.

We used San G as a base with a car which we parked in a lot just outside the walls of the town. It was not a problem. Siena on the other hand is a much larger town and while I have no personal experience staying there with a car I would think it might be more difficult than San G. Others might have an opinion on this. But the question posed to you is do you have a car?

This isn't a direct answer... but the most 'magical' time of San G. is at night after the tourists and daytrippers are gone. I still remember the magical 'light' and wandering around. I definitely wouldn't have gotten that same sense if we had only visited during the day...

Siena also has that "magical" light at night, after the crowds are gone - sit out on Il Campo and watch the sky darken behind the tower.
Siena is certainly closer to Orvieto; from there you can fan out in more than one direction fro day tripping.
