Help with Hotel Galleria vs Hotel Salute in Venice
Hi,
I'm looking for people who have stayed in either of these places to determine which once I should stay at.
I would like to know specifically which hotel is in better shape, whether is easy to get to by vaporetto and how the employee service. Any other comments are welcome too.
Thanks a lot!

Hi!
We (2 adults, 1 child) stayed at the Hotel Galleria for 3 nights in June, 2003. The location is great -- just a few steps from the Academia Bridge and a vaporetto stop. The neighborhood is generally quiet. Our room (#5, if I remember correctly) had a delightful arched window looking directly on the Grand Canal. It was enjoyable to watch the canal traffic, but it was a little noisy when vaprettos would come and go, expecially at night. The room and the hotel in general were fairly dark and cramped, but had a lot of charm; the staff was helpful and accomodating (we needed a cot added for our son -- which, of course, added to the "cramped" feel). If location and (relatively) low cost are important, you won't find a better place. If other considerations are more important to you (bright, cheery rooms; modern furnishings, etc.) you might want to look elswhere. For my money, I would go back to the Hotel Galleria.

I stayed at the Galleria too ( in the winter- not sure if they have AC).
Location can't be beat. It's easy to get there on the vaporetto from the train station, right next to a hole in the wall restaurant that has GREAT pizza, you can get up and get into the Accademia early to beat the lines, etc.
We had a big room overlooking the canal. It was charming and old world feeling, but not spanking new and fancy. I think it was a more expensive room, and we requested it specifically when we booked.
Some of the other rooms I peeked into did look cramped and dark. The view from our canal room was lovely, but the canal traffic noise bothered me on the first night when I had killer jet lag.
The staff that we met was one guy, at the reception desk. He was extremely nice. Be aware that this is more of a pensione- no huge lobby. You go in a little barely marked door, straight up a staircase to a tiny reception area, then back to the rooms.
IMHO, for the price, the canal view room was worth it.

iltte, a friend and I stayed at the Hotel Galleria last fall in a twin bed room with a shared bathroom for E98. Our room was just around the hotel corner from the Grande Canal, but we had a view of it and the Accademia Bridge. We loved this small, quirky, 2nd floor pensione. Fancifully decorated room, friendly face at the reception desk, breakfast in your room, a front door key to let ourselves in at night, and a vaporetto stop just steps away. Yes, there is a bit of canal noise but to us that was part of the charm. Would stay there in a heart beat.
Another friend and I just got home from Venice, and we stayed at the Hotel Alla Salute Da Cici, again in Dorsoduro. Great location again, not on the Grande Canal but a small side canal. Quiter than the Galleria but our "garden" twin bed room for E140 overlooked a very teeny, modest green space with another pensione (the Messner) directly across our window. Room was large'ish and clean, but a huge, bare, white wall with a dent and dirty streaks faced our beds. Staff again were nice, and you are equi-distant between the Accademia and Salute vaporetto stops.
Next time I'm in Venice, I'm going to aim for the Pensione Seguso, right beside La Calcina and much less expensive. However, between the Galleria and the Salute, I'd opt for the Galleria.
Cheers,
Linda

Hi-
My husband and I stayed at the alla Salute da Cici and hated it. See our post "Flophouse" on Tripadvisor.com. ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ce_Veneto.html )
The old guy that heads the front desk during the day is an absolute kook! I think he owns the place, also.
Apparently the kooky owner saw that post on tripadvisor and went back through his records to find my e-mail, then he e-mailed me with a very harrassing, mean note saying I lied.
Crazy... next time I go to Venice, I will stay elsewhere.
