Also, just how flexible is the budget? I can think of several nice options if your price per night was per person rather than per room, but that may be stretching your resources too far.

Sorry I've been away for a couple of days and have not had time to research all your suggestions, hope to do so tonight and tomorrow. When first suggested I thought we all agreed on a "Country House Hotel" being out in the country but it seems as they look at suggested hotels there are additions to what they want to have. Good to know now rather researching more places that don't fit the bill.

Nonconformist our budget is not flexible enough to spend $3000 to $4000 per room for a 3-day stay.

Thanks all!

I thought that would be the case

For a more budget option, you could have a look at the Warner group of hotels: https://www.warnerleisurehotels.co.u...ristmas-breaks - might not be quite your style though, I think the target market is an older domestic one.

Reminds me of the experience some years ago when Mr. H. booked us into a so-called country hotel and it was almost akin to a nursing home.

I agree that a country hotel while it may sound appealing and some are, a hotel in a small town or village might better suit your needs.

Good one historytraveler, hope I don't need the nursing home to recover after this trip.

I don't think Warner fits us Nonconformist. Out of curiosity would you share a couple of the places you would recommend if we were willing to increase the budget?

Just throwing two places we have stayed into the mix, no idea if they would be your cup of tea. We liked both - comfortable, friendly staff and good food.

The Lamb Inn, Great Rissington
http://www.thelambinn.com/

The Full Moon, Frome
http://www.thefullmoon.co.uk/

Good luck with your search.

I was thinking of somewhere like Bishopstrow in Wiltshire, although it may be too close to Bath for you - https://www.bishopstrow.co.uk/offers...use-christmas/
(It might be in your budget after all actually - my arithmetic was off.)

What about Carey's manor in the New Forest?

This one might be a bit over budget, but is a lovely place.

Thank you Nonconformist, Bishopstrow looks like a possibility and not too close to Bath. I could point out to the fam that it's near Salisbury. ;-) Only 5 trains a week to Warminster according to Rome2Rio but we could get a taxi or car service from Salisbury if needed. Mr. Wonderful and I will be using public transport.

Carey's Manor has a black tie dinner which I should have mentioned we want to avoid. We don't want to carry evening clothes and shoes with us.

KayF, I have a tab open to "Christmas in the Cotswolds" and a link to the Lamb Inn among the hotels listed. Good to hear from someone who enjoyed staying there.

<<only 5 trains a week to Warminster according to Rome2Rio>>

I wouldn't trust Rome2Rio check here for time

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

trains every 30 minutes but may be reduced over Christmas 2018

Thank you sofarsogood, there are many trains daily for tomorrow which could be a more accurate indication for next year.
