Help Needed Near Innsbruck

I have been to Austria several times but this is the first time I will be using trains exclusively. I will be taking the train from Salzburg to Innsbruck for the December Christmas markets. I do not want to stay in Innsbruck but somewhere close which is accessible by either train or taxi so that we can go back and forth into Innsbruck. If someone could suggest both a town and a hotel/B&B I would appreciate it. Price for hotel needs to be under 200 euro. Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.

Any special reason you don't want to stay in Innsbruck? I know people here recommend Hall, nearby, but I loved staying in this hotel in the pedestrian center of Innsbruck: http://weisseskreuz.at/en/index.php - especially as I had one of the two rooms with bay windows at the front.

Hall in Tirol is only a few minutes from Innsbruck by train. It's a lovely little town that is highly recommended here as well as by others.

The Gasthof Badl is Hall is a great rustic hotel that is well within your price range.

Innsbruck is a fairly small town and the historic center is adorable. Is there any reason to stay out side and have to trek back and forth.

I've stayed in Innsbruck and Igls (a village on the mountain above Innsbruck) many times. Igls is about fifteen minutes from the city by bus or tram and about ten minutes in a taxi.

There are several nice hotels in Igls. I would suggest the Sport Hotel. It's right at the bus stop in the center of the village. It should be in your price range but if it isn't try the Batzenhausl (lower price but a short walk uphill from the bus stop).

Be aware that some hotels are closed in early December.

Let me know if you need any more information.

HI,

We actually prefer Hall in Tirol's old town to Innsbruck and have stayed 3 times ('01, '03, '05) at the Gasthof Badl. We also stopped in on our way to the Dolomites to say "hello" on a trip in '06.

Hall in Tirol is about 6 miles from Innsbruck. The Gasthof Badl is an easy 5 min. or so walk from the small train station and just a short walk (10 min.) into the old town pedestrian zone of Hall in Tirol. There's a very good restaurant, the Burgtaverne, just across the footbridge from the Badl in the Burg Hasegg. Excellent dinners in a medieval atmosphere. The Gasthof Badl also has it's own retaurant which is very good and reasonable. What we really like about the Badl is it's location, the fantastic views of the Alps (ask for a room w/balcony!) and the warmth and friendliness of the owners, the Steiners.

Innsbruck is not as quoted " a fairly small town " It is a city of 100000 plus. Most probably those recommending Hall have been there in seasons other than winter.
This area is prone to grey , damp cloudy weather in the winter- caused by valley location and the river running through it.
The villages Igls or Seefeld are arranged high above Innsbruck in the mountains- quite often with sun and snow as they are situated hundreds of meters above the valley floor.
Igls a little closer to Innsbruck and easily reached by frequent public transport- good selection of hotels . I have also stayed at the Sport Hotel and found it most satisfactory with a fine spa / wellnees/pool area too.
Seefeld, north of Innsbruck on a high plateau has a great situation and quick train connection. It provides a much nicer Christmas atmosphere.

look on the village website for information and hotels.

The Kaldschmid group has various hotels in all price ranges with good quality

We have not been in winter. We have been to Hall in Tirol/Innsbruck in Ocober 3 times and in April once. Concerning the size of Innsbruck... the old town pedestrian zone is pretty small but Innsbruck itself is a sprawling, large city.
