Looking for small town stopover in western Austria

In mid-May, I'll be headed from Salzburg to Zurich via train, and would like to find a small, scenic, charismatic Alps town to spend an evening / night in along the way. Looking for that quintessential small town "Alps experience" at a reasonably priced local pension or B&B. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi RE,

If you look up the schedules at www.bahn.de you will be able to see all of the intermediate stops.

You might have to settle for Innsbruck.

Innsbruck is nice, but you are looking for a small scenic town and the population of Innsbruck is around 120000.
After looking at the stations for the direct train Salzburg to Zuerich (EC 160 for instance) I think Kufstein or Feldkirch should be more suitable for you. Feldkirch has an English homepage feldkirch.at with more information.

Hi,
My opinion...
A night at the Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol. Hall in Tirol is an absolutely charming and beautiful old town surrounded by Alps, and the Gasthof Badl is one of our favorite places to stay (3 times so far). Both are just 5 minutes walk from the train station. The Badl has nice rooms, great balcony views (ask for a room w/balcony), a great buffet breakfast and a very good (and reasonable) restauarant. Frau Bader and daughter Sonja (owners) are simply the best!.
Also, an excellent (and quite reasonable) place for dinner (within 5 min. of hotel) is Burg Tavern, a restaurant in Burg Hassegg Castle.

Oh, Hall in Tirol is only 6 miles or so east of Innsbruck.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Look up St Anton, will be very quiet that time of the year but the town is really scenic. The town is a 1 minute walk from the train station.
