Fodorites, I can lay no claim on this one; it's strictly the evil mind of my beloved, but here's what he said:

Borrowing from Scarlett's hasty typing, a passport is not a passport, it's a passort, and a chair is not a chair, it's an ASSPORT!!

Capo, you're a guy...were you thinking like my DH was thinking?

If Capo can ask a stand alone question, I'll try one too: What English word is pronounced one way when it's capitalized and another way when it's not?

By the way, I got one right way way back up at the top (PUP) before the rules were...um...writtten. I'll be chiming in soon with a clue.

What an exciting Saturday night!

OK, Betsy, here's back at you while I ponder your question (I love language puzzles): What is the third word in the English besides hungry and angry that ends in gry?

DH is on a roll tonight! This is an English word and when capitalized is pronounced one way, when not, two different ways. It's not what you're thinking of, Betsy, but it's near and dear to the husband...it is Slough, which is town near hubby's birthplace, Windsor. It is pronounced slow, to rhyme with cow. The OED lists two other (non-capitalized) sloughs, the first of which is pronouced sluf, meaning a snake's cast skin. The second is pronounced slow, to rhyme with snow, and its meaning is quaqmire.

Sheesh, all this erudition late at night!

The third word in 'the english language' is language. That is the answer to the old riddle, but that is not the question you asked?

Oops, sorry, the OED did NOT say quaqmire, it said quaGmire, it's way too late to spell!

You're right, dln, that's not the pair I had in mind.

OK, StC, here's the answer to the 'gry' puzzle. The first problem is that it's inevitably phrased wrong, so that it's impossible to get the question correct. The actual phrasing is as follows: Angry and hungry are two words that end in "gry." There are three words in the English language. What is the third word? Everyone knows what it means and everyone uses it every day. Look closely and I have already given you the third word. What is it?

The answer is "language" The key sentences are the second and third. If you just read those two, the answer is obvious. The first sentence is a ruse to throw you off. 'Language' is the only answer that fits the hints that follow those two sentences. Is that what you had in mind?

I'm going to take to aspirin and go to bed!

We westcoasters have an advantage on these late night teasers. While the Europeans are asleep, we are still fresh.

Icithecat, I'm tucking in, too, so may we entrust you with Betsy's puzzler? Will the answer await our morning coffee?

Sorry, I am not that smart. I cannot think of any English name that is pronounced as it is spelt.

Hence asking for 'brown sauce' instead of 'Worchestershire'.

Just call me a 'Rude Canuck"

Dear friends, this is a 20 year word hoax, Language, The language is the answer, tho there are many words ending with gry,, like puggry, an indian scarf.
If you go to google.com, and put in words ending with gry, one doesn't have to be a college graduate or anything, you can find this , ah whatever.

If 'puggry' is not spelt 'puggaree' you can go to (unpleasant 7 letter destination with 'gg' as the third/fourth letters).

Well, here in the UK it's 10:22 am. I figure most of you are still asleep. Looks like you guys had a great time last night.

Reading everything, it looks like the last correct guess was wren's, with the word Nay. I'll look forward to her next word for our virtual crossword puzzle!
