by350 can you give us some feedback? When you say "you're still looking" what's the brief? Is it the 4*s are too pricey & the 3*s not nice enough? Are there no availabilities?
The Ca' Piasani which someone mentioned is in a nice location, has (I hear) jacuzzi tubs & should be around 275e. The only downside is no water views because of it's location.
There's a brand new 5* hotel called the San Clemente. It's on it's own island (of San Clemente)-supposedly a short boat ride from San Marco. Since it's new, they may be offering special intro rates.
Another place to look for ideas is on luxurylink.com All the hotels included in their packages are usually top notch. Some people like the Grand Hotel Dei Doge. It is not, IMO, very well located BUT they have a free boat service to a more central location. I guess it's somewhat equivalent to staying at the San Clemente but you're not actually on a different island.
Finally, if you're looking for luxury at a lesser price, you could consider staying on the Lido at the beginning of September. It's not IN Venice proper (a 10 minute boat ride away) but the prices are somewhat less & you have the added benefit of a beach if the weather is warm.
How long will you be staying & what are you looking for?

I stayed at the Flora a few years ago and loved it... The rooms had NO view whatsoever-- ( we overlooked an alleyway) but the room did have a tiny balcony opening--
It was decorated beautifully- with a murano chandelier and true Venetian hadn painted furniture--
The shower was DEFINITELY small- opened on a corner- but this was one of the most fun hotels we stayed at during our trek thru Italy-- The location was good- right off St Marks Sq and so close to everything and the PRICE WAS RIGHT....We took the Vaporetto to St Marks and lugged our bags THRU St.Marks Sq ( SO PACK light and make sure your luggage has WHEELS!!LOL)
There is also a pretty breakfast room that was super.....
We loved the location as we would go to St Marks every evening and sit at the table, order a cappucino and listen to the music all nite= To me ,this was Very Romantic...
I have also stayed at the Ala ( it was years ago) but was totally un-impressed with the rooms--White Chenille bedspreads and brown walls-- if anyone knows if they have re-decorated, let me know as the location was fine, it had a view of a side canal and the vaporetto dropped us off right at the hotel ( which is a good thing in Venice)--but we were a little more out of the way from St Marks, but close to Peggy Guggenheim's Home ( a museum filled with contemporary art! )

I'm still looking, because I don't feel like I've found the perfect hotel yet. I want as much bang for my buck as possible. My travel agent is looking into the Metropole, but he mentioned that double beds may not be available there.
Does anyone know?

I believe that ALA has some De-Luxe rooms which have a very nice mahogany
furniture and frescos on the walls and ceiling. Check them out. Some of them have a view over a small canal with 2 large windows and some have even more windows and the view of the small piazza in front of the main entrance.

The Metropole has matrimoniale doubles; 2 singles pushed together in a large frame and made up as a king-sized bed. You really wouldn't know unless you searched for the seam...not some big gap you are going to fall through!
The Metropole is a wonderful hotel and my chosen destination in Venice for some time now. That being said, I will be there for a few days this September myself and was quoted such a high price (0ver $500 but don't recall traumatic details!) that I am relocating to the Antico Doge.
I had scoped out various hotels last fall for my niece's honeymoon this September and this place is really spectacular at very good prices and excellent location. They are booked into one of the suites with cananl view for maybe $250 night. I've booked the one big suite with balcony and canal view for 300 euro/night. (Will actually not be there at same time, fyi.) Anyway, someone else here metnioned the Antico Doge so you may have already checked out the web site and rejected. If not, give it a look!

We just returned from 2 weeks in Italy which began with a 3 night stay in Venice at the Antico Doge. It is exactly as their website describes. We found it to be quite charming and the staff very helpful.
We have stayed in Venice on 4 previous trips, but it was the first time in Italy for my brother, sister-in-law and niece, age 15. We were thrilled with our hotel choice. My husband and I stayed in Room 103 and my brother's family in 109. I requested a triple for them, which was designated as a Superior Triple. It was actually 2 rooms. It consisted of a smaller entry room with single bed and a larger full size room with large bed. Both rooms were nicely furnished. It had a huge bathroom (by Italian standards) with whirlpool tub). This room overlooked a courtyard. Our room a junior suite overlooked a canal and Campo SS.Apostoli. I loved getting up early in the morning and watching the activity in the Campo.
All walls are covered in lovely brocade fabrics as well as the furnishings. The bathrooms are marble. Our rooms were immaculate. There is also a small safe in the closet which is so helpful for storing tickets, passports, etc. The breakfast room, very nice, was somewhat crowded during our stay. Although we never had to wait very long for a table. There is a small adjoining sitting area where met for wine (which we bought in a nearby wine shop) each evening before dinner.
We arrived in Venice by plane and took a water taxi directly to the hotel. It was a wonderful way to arrive in this enchanting city. The cost for 5 of us was 90 euros and well worth it! The vision of my niece sitting wide-eyed in the back of the boat with that beautiful long blond hair blowing in the breeze will stay with me always.
No matter where you choose to stay in Venice, just enjoy! It truly is a magical place.

I think the Bauer would suit your needs. It's a beautiful hotel with a great reputation on the Grand Canal and only a short distance to St. Marks. (It's around the corner from Harry's Bar.) It's a lovely combination of old and new (been extensively renovated) and I believe it's rated as 4 to 4 1/2 stars.

So it looks like my travel agent has booked us at the Metropole from September 8-12 at a rate of EURO 288/night. This is for a standard room w/ breakfast included.
Is this a good deal? Any opinions on the hotel? I have heard lots of good things about it.

A Google search for "hotel metropole venice" pulls up plenty of reviews on tripadvisor.com:

You can also type "metropole AND venice" in the search box at the top of this page to pull up prior threads here with feedback.
Happy honeymoon!

We had a large bed in our room at the Metropole. We sleep on a king at home and swear this was the same size and didn't seem like it was pushed together. I can't remember the room number but we were on the third floor overlooking the side canal.
