Help me decide...Hotels in Positano/Amalfi/Capri
I am going to the Amalfi coast in August. I've spent a lot of time in Italy, but never visited the Amalfi coast. I will be spending 2-3 days in Naples and then want to head somewhere for a relaxing 3-4 days. I am looking for a place where I can just hang out, enjoy the scenery, and take in the sun. It doesn't necessarily have to be quiet, just relaxing. Some sort of activity might be nice if I get bored sitting by the pool.

My travel agent was unable to get me into San Pietro in Positano. She has, however, worked her magic and can get me in at Quisisana (Capri), Le Sireneuse (Positano), or Santa Caterina (Amalfi). I've read the posts on these boards, but I'd like to get some feedback if anybody has seen one or more of them. And if there is anything particular that I should take note of.

I think Santa Caterina has the layout most like San Pietro, but I am wondering if Amalfi is a bit isolated. I also know that Capri can be a madhouse, but am thinking that it might be sort of entertaining. Any thoughts or ideas much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sirenuse, is a good bet. It's relatively small and intimate, great views and exclusive.

Quisi is a much larger property, more commercial, but still very nice. It's bang in the heart of Capri so alot of things going on.

I hear the Santa Caterina is beautiful, but I think it is a bit off the beaten track...

Dear John,

You will love the Amalfi Coast. Depending on your price range, the hotel selection is vast. I was there last month and wrote up my travelogue of hotel recommendations, shopping, restaurants, and posted it. If you put in "kiki" into the search box, it will appear.

Have fun!
Hi John,

I forgot to mention but I saw the Quisisana, and it is a 5 star property and lovely. I do have a suggestion, though. The Hotel Luna is a 4 star hotel that is 1 block away, and the property (gardens and pool) were just beautiful. I toured some of the rooms for my next visit, and am definitely staying there. I have a sense that the Luna is much less expensive than the Quisisana, plus you won't be in the hotel that long, except to sleep and take a midday break. The Quisisana and the Luna are in CapriTown, so the ocean views are from a hill and afar. I usually prefer an ocean view, but the floral garden/pool view from the Luna was so spectacular b/c the gardens and pool were beautiful. If you decide to go with the Quisisana, ask about their pool and floral garden view b/c you might enjoy that better on Capri.

Capri is very relaxing, and 3 days would be good. I posted just about all of the activities that you can do on Capri on my "kiki" posting.

Have you visited Pompeii or Herculeanum? If not, I strongly suggest either or both. You can do the day trip from Naples, or hire a car service to pick you and your luggage up at Naples, drive you to one or the other and wait for you, then drop you off in Sorrento or Positano for the night, and enjoy either of these 2 beautiful seaside towns. They are amazingly beautiful at nite, and it is a different feel from Capri. You can take the ferry first thing in the morning over to Capri.

have fun!
