Came back on to update this thread - We booked the Best Western Pasitea for our stay in Positano.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - the pasitea seemed best for the views, price, and comfort over all.

After typing out the notes below I've just noticed you have now booked, but posting anyway in case anyone else asks about this place.
I have stayed at Le Sirene Positano, for 2 separate periods of a week. It's a beach bar with a few fairly basic rooms, a couple of bays down from Positano - and is *all* about the beach. You can't see Positano from the bay at all. The rooms as I said are fairly basic (and the balconies on the front ones are very small, just about enough room to squeeze 2 dining chairs on) but the seafood is fantastic. The only practical way in and out is via the hotel's boat which shuttles betwen the bay and the Positano dock during beach hours and at other times by arrangement. Will it still be open in October ? I'd be surprised.
I liked it for weeks doing nothing but sunbathing, swimming, reading, admiring the view, eating and drinking - not leaving the place all week - but there's nothing else to do there. Even if it is open in October I'd be doubtful about whether the weather would be reliable enough for a totally beach-based holiday, but you say you don't want that anyway.
Curious about your use of the word "inns" though - what are you looking for that isn't covered by "hotels" ?
