Amalfi coast

My husband and I will be staying on Capri for two nights in Sept.and then going by ferry into Positano to spend two nights on the Amalfi coast. We have narrowed down our selection of places to stay to Hotel Miramare in Positano, but are intrigued by Hotel Tritone closer to Praiano. Another is Hotel Conca d'oro in Praiano. Has anyone stayed in any of these places? We would like to book the Tritone but we're concerned that it seems isolated. Would we be better off at Hotel Miramare close to the center of Positano? We would be interested what anyone thinks of these places. Also, what is anyone's experience at the Hotel Weber on Capri? Thank you.

Hi carl,

You will need a car for the Tritone.

The Conca d'Oro is at the Eastern edge of Praiano. It hangs along the cliffside and is rather dramatic. The buses stop at the door.

We enjoyed staying in Praiano (small town) and visiting Positano.

Thank you for your reply, Ira. The Tritone did say that the bus stops in their parking lot throughout the day and cabs and boats are available, but we were glad to have your confirmation about the car. I'm thinking that I would like to be able to walk around in Positano in the evening, but I guess we can do that by day too. By the way, Fodors says that Conca d'oro is in Positano. That website is also very nice. I'm assuming we can't go wrong with hotel selection and views! Any other thoughts on the area, we'd love to hear. thank you.

I would stay at the Miramare in Positano because I like walking to dinner and hanging out at a cafe listening to music without having to drive anywhere or rely on the bus. In Positano you can do this. I know you can do this during the day but you will find the nights will be more tranquil because many of the day tourists will be gone.

Message: Following is an excerpt from my June '01 trip report:
If you like touristy, crowded places, w. lots of "action", then stay in
Positano. But if you want quiet quarters w. spectacular views, the Hotel Tritone
near Praiano is the place to stay. We have been there twice; cancelled our trip
to Sicily to return for a few more days just last week. EVERY room has a view
to the west all the way to the Faraglioni (the 3 "rocks" for which Capri is
famous), and on a clear day you can actually see the arch in the middle one
from your room balcony. To the east is a magnificent vista of the village of
Praiano, w. its twin steepled church in the center of your view and the ancient
church on the horizon about half way up the mountain. Straight down about
1000 feet is the sea. You can watch the ship traffic in and out of Salerno from
your balcony as well.
The beach facilites are superb (although the beach itself is rocky, like all of
them along the Amalfi Coast), and you walk through a long tunnel carved out of
the rock to get there after a long elevator ride. There is a bar and a second
swimming pool down at the beach as well.
The breakfasts (which are included in the room rate) are sumptuous, including
different pastries/cookies of the region every morning (including almond cookies
and cannola), and you can get delicious omelets w. ham/cheese and apricot
juice along w. the standard breakfast fare most hotels provide. They are served
on an outdoor terrace w. to die for views.

The hotel is literally carved into the side of the cliff below the road, so it is very
quiet and very private, if that is what you want. You may even hear the "cock of
Praiano" crowing in the sunrise if you leave the doors to your balcony open, and
you can easily hear the church bells toll the quarter hours. It is the loveliest
place I have ever stayed in decades of travel.
The downside, if there is one, is that you really need a car to see the other
sites along the Coast and inland if you stay there. The hotel does have
adequate parking, however.
The service is superb.

Wow, AZ, just when I thought we had made a decision to stay in Positano; you have certainly made the Tritone sound like the place to go! and you just got back last week? Thanks for your great input.

Not quite; the report is from June 2001--just realized it's hard to see the apostrophe in my message.
For more info on Tritone: http://italyby.com/tritone/
Have a great trip.

Hi Carl,

>..Fodors says that Conca d'oro is in Positano. <

Sorry about the error. I was thinking of the Hotel Onda Verde.

Ira: Have you stayed at the Hotel Onda Verde or have any firsthand knowledge of it? We have booked a large number of rooms for Sept 2005 for a family trip. Their web page is awesome and we have been impressed with it. Any first hand info would be very appreciated.

Peggyann: Here is another excerpt from my 2001 trip report re. Onda Verde:
We also checked out Hotel Onda Verde near Praiano since we had seen it
mentioned several times on this forum. It is a great setting w. a very nice
seaside walk. It appeared to be clean and well kept, and parking was no
problem, but we did not actually stay there so I cannot comment on the quality
of service/food. It is less expensive (L300,000) than Hotel Tritone (L400,00), but
the views are not as sweeping it is much lower, nearer the water and some of
the balconies don't offer much privacy.

Hi Peggyann,

When we were in Praiano, we met a few folks who were staying at the Onda Verde.

Their opinions were mixed. I think it was just a matter of what preconceptions they had brought with them.

What are your expectations?

To AZ: Thanks for the comments. Hmmmm, views not so sweeping... but nice views none the less??

Ira: I guess that my expectations are that it be like the web page. We are a large group and the elvator down makes it attractive to the older ones among the family. We must take half board so I'm hoping that the food is from decent to downright good, and that the rooms are clean and will have nice views. The Tritone looks fabulous but 300 euro a night per room as a minimum w/o dinner make it too expensive for most of us. We're going to pay 110 euro per person half board at Onda Verde. I guess I am looking for a pretty true 3 star experience. Thanks Ira.

Peggyann: Absolutely nice--and more! Views are great just about anywhere on Amalfi Coast. For the best, be sure to visit Ravello.

Hi peggyann,

Ithink that you will find the Onda Verde quite satisfactory.

Two very good restaurants in Praiano, with wood-fired pizza ovens are
La Strada and La Brace. Both are on the right side of the main street as you walk away from the hotel.

To AZ and Ira: Great to hear that we are OK for the Onda Verde. Making plans for a large group, maybe 24 folks, is daunting to say the least. I checked out all the hotels I could find searching the net (amalfi.it, slowtrav.com among others) This hotel had all the necessary perks, elevator, views, at least 12 rooms, parking and the half board will work best for this group. Cost was 110 pp. So thanks for putting my mind at rest. My DH suggested that our family visit Italy together. He has no idea what work he has given me! Why do I find this work so much fun anyway?? I am most appreciative to you two for taking the time to share your info. Happy travels to you,

Peggyann,

Have you checked on payment options at the Onda Verde? I am also researching Amalfi coast hotels and saw a report on Tripadvisor that the hotel doesn't take credit cards. Don't know if that's true or not and can't determine from the website (at least I couldn't) but that would be a definite deterrent for me.

Sometimes if a place doesn't take credit cards it is because they don't want to pay the surcharge to the card compamy and pass the savings along to the client. If this is the case here, it is a better deal, IMHO.
