I applaud Joe for broadening the discussion somewhat (pun intended), but what about the other possibilities? Unfortunately, I have rarely been approached by a woman (whether for romantic or gigolotic purposes), excluding those trying to pick my pocket or engage in a financial transaction, but I have also had such encounters with lustful males. To no avail.

Well, you men seem to think a normal woman would not approach you just to talk or get to know you.

Women don't always have some motive, maybe you just look like a nice man to meet.

Yes. In a bar in Zurich. My brother-in-law and I were having a drink in this pretty cool place when we were approached by two gorgeous women. The chatting was innocent enough at first (German and broken English) but soon hands were everywhere and before I knew it, the top few buttons of my shirt were undone and I thought the one of them was making off with a thin gold chain I was wearing. She was not. We high-tailed it out of there before my sister ever found out !

As a female, I think some of you guys don't understand the difference in a gigolo etc and just a one-night-stand.

This is interesting sociologically, because you don't really have female gigolos picking up male tourists, and the approach for male vs. female gigolos is different. Female gigolos are called mistresses, and find wealthy older men to support them through personal ads, etc -- this is more a long term prospect. Men with little appeal but a lot of money advertise for them, you see those in the personal ads (looking for student, etc, for generous older man).

There is also the sell yourself in marriage, which is sort of a female gigolo and probably more common in Asia/Eastern Europe. I sat next to a couple in a Prague cafe going through that transaction. They couldn't even communicate at all -- she was Russian or Czech, and he was a middle-aged guy from CHicago. She looked bored as all-get-out but was wolfing down her steak dinner while he was speaking pidgin English loudly (figuring that would make her understand, even though she didn't speak English) about how she could come to his place in Chicago, do the cooking, etc, and if they got along, they'd get married. I found this bizarre that he wanted to marry someone he couldn't even speak to and neither had bothered to learn a word of each other's language (he was carrying Eyewitness Prague around, so wasn't even familiar with the area).

Some male gigolos don't just want money or to be kept (or treated to everything, let's say), but want to emigrate. I think for some females in the Pacific or Asia countries that are going through the marriage companies, that can be true, also, although some financial security also probably is desired along with that.

Female gigolos/prostitutes attract through promise of sex. Male gigolos attract through flattery and promise of romance/love. It is funny to think of a man being interested in a woman who preys on male tourists, but the converse seems true.

One-night-stands don't benefit financially. I think what Diablo had was a one-night-stand.

I think Nocinonut is correct.... A gigolo is wined, dined and bestowed with gifts in exchange for sexual favors. The female equivalent would be a golddigger, not a prostitute. (Prostitution is a flat-out business deal, IMO..........)

Female gigolos/prostitutes attract through promise of sex. Male gigolos attract through flattery and promise of romance/love.

Very well put, Christina. Both understand all too well what the other sex wants.

You're also right in that we might call a "female gigolo" would be what we classically call a "mistress."

While there may be male gigolos, they are, I'm sure, FAR more rare than the female equivalent. And male prostitutes primarily (if not exclusively) serve a male clientele since the vast majority of women neither have to pay for sex, nor want to pay for sex with a stranger.

Yes, I've been approached. But, let's just say they were barking up the wrong tree.

A cougar is an older woman trying to approach a younger man ; the man would still be the gigolo if he went with her....

I still think a mistress is not a female gigolo, you can be a mistress to a poor man you know.

A "GOLDdigger" is someone who wants to be with a man for his money same as a gigolo.

Geez, do I have to tell you stories so you will believe me?!

Good point, Nocinonut. You CAN be a mistress to a poor man.......... (whether you'd want to be is another matter! )

How come, bonnie, you and I are the only ones who know the score here?

Interesting, yes who would want to be a mistress to a poor man, maybe if you had a rich husband already and kept a poor stallion on the side? Yes?

Mark, yes, by definition, a mistress is a woman with a married man.

In theory, nocinonut is right, a woman can be a mistress to a man of any income/asset level as long as he's married. In reality, however, I suspect this is very rarely the case.

My favorite line regarding this is from a past episode of Frasier...

Frasier (in exasperation), "Roz! Men can't use sex to get what we want. Sex IS what we want!"

Kinda, maybe: I was walking from London's Liverpool street station to a nearby defunct brewery used for exhibits. Got a little lost, and definitely looking like a tourist. As I walked toward and then under an overpass a woman across the street kept pace with me and and kept staring at me. Not used to being stared at, I looked in the direction she was looking (couldn't be looking at me, I thought), but there was only a wall next to me. I probably smiled, before a dim light went on, then walked under the overpass. Back in the light on the other side I stopped and got out my map only to find that she had crossed the street and was coming up behind me. Could have been innocent, but it creeped me out. I walked up a few addresses to ask some men moving some furniture and asked them directions (I couldn't bring myself to ask her) and she disappeared back under the underpass. I'll never know for sure what her intentions were, and probably don't want to know.

Ah, Capo, it is refreshing to see that you are naive about women and affairs with married men.

Thanks, nocinonut, but I think of a woman having an affair with a married man as different from a "mistress." You may see them as one and the same. Vive la difference!

Bitter, that was probably a prostitute ........ but definitely not what I'd consider a "female gigolo."
