"woman can be a mistress to a man of any income/asset level as long as he's married. In reality, however, I suspect this is very rarely the case."
This is what I was referring to, Capo, women and men have been having affairs on my different income levels for many years.
(Why am I getting so involved in this?)

Madison, re: If the women knew what great personalities you possessed they would be approaching you in flocks.
Interesting to see you mention this because, just yesterday, prompted by an article about the Seattle dating scene last week, we were having a discussion about this "approaching" thing on another message board. All the men recounted numerous times they had approached women only to be turned down, and most women said they rarely, if ever, approached men because they didn't want to risk this.

Let's try this again:
A gigolo is supported in his lifestyle by a woman in return for sexual favors. (Reverse the sexes, and you have a golddigger.)
A prostitute, at a given time, offers sexual intercourse/favors for a certain price, usually money.
A mistress is a woman who enters into an ongoing sexual relationship with a married man.

Would not a mistress also be a prostitute if she entered into an ongoing sexual relationship with a married man who gave her money? And if he supported her in a lavish lifestyle might she also be a golddigger?

Degas, a mistress is a mistress, having sex with a married man because she loves and wants to be with him. When it becomes a business deal, i.e., she's having sex with him for money and for no other reason, she is no longer a mistress, she's basically a prostitute. (She's not BOTH a mistress and a prostitute... she's a prostitute.)
In a situation where a man willingly lavishes money on a woman, supports her lifestyle, hoping for, and usually getting, sexual favors, she's a golddigger......... (female gigolo)...... but she's not considered a prostitute because nothing is "engraved in stone"......... With a golddigger, things aren't so cut and dried.
Okay, enough! My head is tired......... someone else debate this thing!

A mistress is set up in an apartment by her lover, usually a married man
Then there are love affairs, (not a mistress, and then we have the strumpet, the loose woman or as Jane Curtin called her, You Slut.

Cigale, you said:

That is not the technical definition of a mistress. A mistress is a woman carrying on a sexual relationship with a married man. Being a mistress to a man that man is supporting that woman! (Although I agree with you, in many cases they do. I'm thinking Charles & Camilla here! )

OK so I like the definition of golddigger, prostitute and mistress so far.
What about those 40-ish divorced women with 2 kids. The ones that wouldn't have looked at me when I was 20 even though they've always said "personality" is more important than looks.
Now that I go to Europe twice a year, have a home that's paid off and gad about the US as I please, these women are suddenly interested in me.
What do we can them?
And yes, I know people call me bitter.

so then if the mistress is married then she's an adulterer, correct?
so Amy Fisher (Long Island Lolita) is just a mistress? Okay - a stupid mistress but wouldn't sleeping with Joey Buttafucco qualify her as something more(less)?
