I'm joining this party late. Just got back from maitais on our boat, watching the sun set over the Olympic Mountains. All you could see of Mt. Rainier, was its pink hat!
If it's not raining in Seattle...where the heck do you live, Scarlett? You should come visit sunny Seattle!

Although an L.A. boy, my family all comes from Washington. Here's to some great nights on Puget Sound!! Mai tais need not be consumed only in tropical environments.

Gocats - Scarlett must live here in DC with me! It has been raining here almost every day for the last 5 weeks (no joke, on May 28th we made the news for have exactly 30 days of rain in a row).
Maybe I should move to Seattle too! Of course, I'm all for drinking more mai tais too! I remember Mamma's from when I was in Maui back in '97! Thanks for the memory recall, bluefan!

I have to admit, I do get grumpy when traveling to Europe, I am fine when I am there but waiting online at customs/airport/immigration does get me in a lousy mood. It happens more so on the way back, maybe because the fun is over....

I will miss my cats too. I plan to call them once a week so they can hear my voice. Ok, no one verbally attack me for this...
When I go on vacation, I am so happy I could burst. I have an ear to ear smile and I feel so good. I get up early in whatever city and run into the streets with glee !!!

JandaO - don't worry, you have fellow cat lovers on this board! When I was in London for 2 weeks, I could have stayed there forever, except I couldn't wait to see my 2 "kids"!
I didn't call them, but I did email my roommate to see how they were doing!

Sorry, I don't buy the 'I'm always happy when I'm traveling' line! Unless you are with a personal tour guide who takes care of everything, e.g. hotel, restaurant, transportation, etc, there will always be some stressful times especially when you consider jet-lag and eating food you are not accustomed to. While travelling opens you up to amazing experiences, it is not always the most pleasant experience (especially when flying from the US to Europe). Little things which do not bother you at home are more likely to set you off while travelling. Fortunately, I think most people tend to rememeber the good times rather than the bad times upon returning home.

I am another mad cat loving fodorite! I have 5 babies (cats, that is!) I am looking after an additional one at the moment. One of my neighbours knocked on my door extremely distressed - she had come home following a two week holiday to find a little black cat had been locked up in her shed for TWO WEEKS - EEEKKK!! She didn't even know I worked for a cat charity (she thought he was one of my cats). Luckily I had a free cat pen (for the homeless cats that I foster while finding them a loving home). I now have him with me, while we search for the owner. He is eating like a horse and now putting on the pounds! He was a bag of bones and so pitiful two weeks ago when she brought him to me.
So, remember folks! check the shed and outhouses for any stray kitties before you travel! please.

Have I got a cat for you, English one. Two, in fact! I'm not "Go Cats!" for nothing!
Maybe I should bring them to Europe with me on the QE2, like the doggie person seeking advise on this board. Will you be waiting at the dock?
And maybe another cat lover out there would pay my way! Hooray! I promise I won't be grumpy!

Sorry, I am always happy when I'm traveling. Sometimes I'm tired. Sometimes we make a wrong turn. Sometimes I eat something that does not quite taste like I had expected, but to paraphrase an old golf phrase, "The worst day traveling beats the best day working" (and I LIKE my job). I suppose if a hotel really screwed me up, I could become grumpy. I suppose if I got sick, I would become grumpy. But so far, I have been lucky. Actually, little things do not set me off in Europe because I think I try to be a better person there than I am at home (it is their country, no matter where you are).
This attitude has also helped me on the golf course, where I used have a tad of a temper. Now my old college buddies call me "Euro Tom" on the course, because I don't throw my clubs and swear (as much as I used to).
As for our cats, my wife calls the place where they stay once a week, and my business partner (also a cat lover) goes to visit a couple of times while we're gone.

Scarllet lives in soggy NYC
I am another one who walks around with a huge smile on my face when I am traveling, can't help it, it makes me happy~
I don't have a cat anymore, he died at the age of 18 and broke our hearts, but I do have Pup now. ((&
) He stays with a sitter and wherever we go, we call in the middle of the stay to check on him.
But I still can't get him to talk to me on the phone
