I am thinking of booking a trip through Greek Seas (a company where they provide a private sail boat to islands around Greece for a week.)

Has anyone used Greek Seas before and what was your experience? Are the seas rough to a point where it's hard to sleep or enjoy yourself?

Overall I want to find a fun, affordable, efficient way to enjoy these islands...The sail boat would be cool- but I want to make sure it has offered other people a great experience as well.

Whether the sea is rough depends on where you are going. We used a company called Sea Scapes and sailed the Dodecanese for two weeks and loved it!

The seas are very rough in July and August when the Meltemi Winds are at their strongest.

We were in the Dodecanese in August and they were rough only 1 day in the two weeks. Some days it was so calm we couldn't sail...I think it depends where you want to go...?

Winds vary according to time of year, as brotherleelove mentioned, but also according to which island group you visit. Cyclades in the Aegean Sea generally have the strongest winds, while islands in the Ionian Sea are much calmer. An excellent website for you to check is www.sailingissues.com.

We sailed with Greek Seas last summer (June) on a catamaran. It was a fantastic experience overall. The yacht was in great shape and the skipper (kostas) was incredibly knowledgeable about restaurants and activities on all the islands. He seemed to know the locals at every port. Definitely one of the best trips I've ever taken.

The seas were fairly calm in June in the Cyclades. But I have heard that July and August can bring rougher seas. The Saronic Gulf is supposed to have calmer seas and shorter sailing times....so that may be an option if you're worried about sea sickness.

Hi. We started looking into sailing the Greek Islands and I am also considering Greek Seas, but chartering the whole yacht for the 2 of us for a week seems expensive, anyone interested in sharing the charter?

Here's an idea. Contact the charter company, tell them your travel dates, and ask that they be on the lookout for another couple to share expenses with you for those days. They may find someone or they may offer you a better deal if no one else is booking for those days.

I use http://www.alphayachting.com whenever I want to charter a yacht. They will propose best time to charter, best route and rates. They have been around for over 20 years. Ask to talk with Manos.

I don't know a lot about the Sea Winds, but I know that captains are experts in predicting sea weather. So, when a bad weather is coming he will ship into a port for safety, and in the Aegean you are never out of sight of land. Don't worry, it's gonna be a great experience, I'm sure.
