I haven't stayed there but I'm familiar with the general area. It's close to the flowermarket and the nice museum Van Loon. If you stroll north, you'd be in the Kalverstraat shopping area (Damrak at its north end) and the major museums near Vondelpark is within walking distance if you walk toward the south.
I noticed you asked the same question for Delphi Hotel.I think the Grand Albus has a more strategic location than the Delphi. Apollolaan is actually not a bad area (I used to go there to visit relatives years ago) but it is in South Amsterdam, too far from the attractions. I remember the only thing close to Apollolaan was the RAI Congress-center.

Mike,
I'm pretty sure that the Grand Albus used to be called the De Compagnie. We stayed there around 4 or 5 years ago and were happy with our choice.
The rooms were a little small but that came as no surprise, particulatly given the relatively inexpensive rate. If the pictures on the Albus website are to be believed the rooms look as though they have improved since we were there.
The best feature of the hotel in our opinion was the location - just south of the Muntsplein and an easy walk to all of the sights.
Hope this helps,
Jim
