Best location in Amsterdam?

I don't know Amsterdam and was wondering if any one can recommend a very nice location. We heard that the red light district is very grubby.

You're right about the red light district. I recommend the area around Vondelpark. It's a nice neighborhood, it's close to major museums and to good shopping areas, and it's a short walk to other points of interest in central Amsterdam.

I stayed at Parkhotel Amsterdam, right at Vondelpark and across the street from Hard Rock and Holland Casino.
Great location and easy walk to Dam Square and Red Light. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum is right next door.

I enjoyed our stay between the Rijsmuseum and the Heinekin brewery at Hotel Kap, but we also rented bicycles. I think it would be too far out to really enjoy if we had to walk everywhere. I preferred staying near the Jordaan.

We stayed in the western canal ring, near the Jordaan, and really liked that area. It is more residential with plenty of bars, restaurants and boutiques, and easy walking distance to many other parts of the city.

Any area will do, except of course in the red light district.
Everything is so close together.

We like the Canal Ring area , particularly the "9 Streets" section.
