good pubs or cafes in Regensburg

Wondering what there is to do in the way of pubs and cafes in Regensburg. Will only be there a short time, but would like to know some quaint pubs or watering holes.

Our idea of fun is cafe sitting by day, people watching, and beer swilling by night, ideally in places that are not exclusively "tourist."

We are staying in Old Town area....any ideas in that neighborhood are appreciated. Good views are a plus.

Thanks for your input,

brendan

Can't remember any pubs in my brief visits to Regensburg, but an old restaurant serving good Bavarian food and beer is the Dicker Mann. It is close to the Haidplatz and the tourist office.

The Princess Café, right across from the town halls (yes: plural, one old, one new), is the oldest in Regensburg. It's very nice and has a fine selection of chocolates in the front of the building.

Asking if there are any breweries in Bavaria is like asking if there are any fish and chips joints in England.

We visited the Kneitinger Brauerei on Arnulfsplatz one night for supper. About half the crowd was just drinking, mostly groups of older men, perhaps refugees from the home front. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere but I am not sure that "quaint" is a word that I would use to describe it. It is downtown just off the pedestrian zone.

Regards, Gary

Don't know about the beer, although I can't imagine a Bavarian town without a tasty brew. I do know that I ate the very best apple kuchen in a little cafe right on the platz. Enjoy!

Planning to stop in Regensburg for 3-4 hours on our drive from Munich to Dresden in late November. Where should we eat lunch? Anything we should not miss?

The cathedral, one of the few Gothic churches in Bavaria; the old town hall; the Roman gate; the Palace of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis (no, not the moving kind); the stone bridge over the Danube and the nearby historic sausage kitchen. If you have a chance to hear the famous Domspatzen choir, don't miss the opportunity.
