Golling, austria
Planning to spend seven or more days in and around the Golling Area during the month of Sept, 06 and looking for hotel/B&B base in Golling. Also places of interests and restaurants where locals eat. Thanking everyone in advance for all info. Andrea

See the lake region east of Salzburg (towns like St.Wolfgang, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt (MUST SEE!), Gosau (glacier view)...are all must see)
See the eagles nest in Berchtesgaden.

Can't be of much help with where to stay and eat around Golling, but have a few suggestions for sightseeing. I assume you will have a car.
A very pretty drive is from Golling to Saalfelden, via Bischofshofen, Dienten and Maria Alm. That route goes along the Steinerne Meer (Sea of Rocks).
From Saalfelden continue driving to Zell am See, have a pleasant Kaffee with pastry in the garden of of the the Grand Hotel, overlooking the lake and Grossglockner. Also, if time permits, take the cable car up to the top of the Schmittenhoehe. Great view (assuming that you are doing the trip on a sunny day). Then continue to Bruck and return to Golling on the B-311 federal highway via St. Johann and Bischofshofen. This is a nice day trip.
Obviously, on another day you could go back to Bruck and take the Grossglocknerstrasse, but be prepared that it may be slow going, if you get stuck behind a bus going up the pass road.
If you are into skiing, you could o some glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn Gletscher. You get there from Kaprun, which is about 15km southwest of Zell am See.
Another favorite of mine near Golling is the Millstaetter See (Lake). You would be going there south on the Autobahn A-10, which is quite scenic, cutting through the Radstaetter Tauern mountain massif. Be sure you have an autobahn vignette for your car,it's required for any travel on the Austrian autobahns.
In Millstatt, one of my favorites is the Hotel Forelle; nice place to have a meal overlooking the lake and mountains. A bit expensive for staying overnight. Don't make the trip to Millstadt on a weekend. Along the way, as it goes through several tunnels, the autobahn narrows from 4 to 2 lanes and traffic can back up pretty badly. Incidentally, there is an extra toll for that stretch of autobahn.
Finlally, I am sure the author "Austria" will tell you all about how to go from Golling to Hallstatt.

Hi Austria: Thanking you for your reply Re; Golling. We plan to be in Austria Sept. 2007, staying in Golling at Hotel Torrenerhof, or if you can recommend. Need info on festivals in Golling and the Surrounding area and any local activies, we love to dance.
