Going to Paris? Be yourself
#41
It should be mentioned that a lot of people who talk about the way "proper" people dress in Paris are talking about people going to work in an office. I don't want to look like I am going to work when I am on holiday, so it does not bother me to be dressed casually in NYC or London even when I am in an area where the majority of people are dressed for work.
This has nothing to do with being dressed like a slob, but I am really dismayed by the number of people who feel pressure about what they should wear.

"One would just feel more Parisian if one is dressed, maybe not necessarily like a Parisian, but a bit more dressed up than what one would wear to a mall in Minnesota."
And why would a tourist want to feel more Parisian? I thought people stopped that make-believe stuff before they got out of middle school.

My personal experience is that I felt underdressed in jeans and tshirts the first time I went to Europe. I'm sure no one else really gave a rat's patoot what I looked like, but it made me feel slightly uncomfortable. I was mentally more comfortable the second trip when I left my jeans and tshirts at home. I'll never be one of those effortlessly fashionable women, so I wasn't aiming for that..........but I felt less self conscious when I wasn't dressed for the mall in Minnesota.

Some time ago, I tried making a photo journal of how Italians dressed when on holiday in Italy. I posted it several times on Trip Advisor Italy forums, but the "dress up" people were impervious to facts.

I am a bit proponent of being comfortable. So I am not advocating wearing high heels and pencil skirts while touring Paris. When I posted my comment, I was just thinking of people who are not privileged enough to live or to travel to Paris frequently. For some of us, believe it or not, it is a big deal to be in Paris. Some of us, not all, may choose, out of our free will, to dress in a sporty but stylish way (Israeli call it "sport elegant"). I am not saying one should, but this is a free country and so is France. I think difference of opinions should be respected.

Pintxos, just so you know my comment wasn't directed at you. I haven't even read most of the thread, I just like chiming in on Paris clothing debates from time to time. If people want to dress up to come to Paris that's fine but if people don't want to dress up that's fine too. The city is full of people dressed both ways.

What I wear never concerns me and next year will be our 5th time to Paris.
I have jerseys from all the countries we have visited and will bring a few and buy a few more.
Shorts are my staple, with very low cut socks and sneakers.
Only going for 11 nights, 4 in Paris and 7 in Nice.
We will have carry on our luggage.
The only thing we concentrate on in any country is, 'please' and 'thank you'.
My wife speaks some French, so that helps.

Mim...you sure hit some familiar peeves. I would only add, try hard to be who you are..let the other turistas go their own way. You're the one paying for your trip...so enjoy it to the fullest.
Hope you're well these days.

I think it was someone here who turned me on to Maitai's Picture Book.
Wow - This lady can tie a scarf! Not to mention the amount of Hermes she owns. But even if you took away the designer brands, she dresses with classic style. Much of it is club casual. She makes a great point of having capsule pieces. She adds a scarf, great shoes and a great bag.
Now, if only to have one of her many Birkin bags. LOL

tower, loved your last book. I hope they make it into a film.
MY fashion comment is if over 30 don't wear leggings in Paris.
(different than skinny jeans)I posted about Maitai but remember she can afford to shop at those fabulous places with great fabrics and her many Hermes bags, bracelets, scarves and belts> I like her style BUT she is beautiful and has a great figure so she can make an H&M dress look fabulous.
tenthumbs that vid I posted several times is much easier than maitais.
