At this point, we will go with the Shuffles. I am bringing chocolates for Mama and a favorite liqueur (we will purchase in Bologna) for Papa. I want something different for the sons.
Thanks to everyone for their helpful ideas.

Boardshorts. Most Italian fashions are as good or nicer than American fashions. They still don't have the best boardshorts (Oakley, Quicksilver) and younger men are wearing them rather than the European standard marble bag now. The best ones come in waist sizes but you can still find small, medium and large sizes if you aren't sure.

We aren't Italian but my husband and I are both 28 so I figured I'd put in my .02.
I really don't think clothing is a good gift unless you really know the person well. The shuffles aren't a bad idea assuming you know they both have a computer. My husband and I both have an mp3 player but the shuffles are so little they can be good for working out, etc. and can always be passed along easily if they already have one.
Otherwise I would say a bottle of wine or liquor is always appreciated but I see you're already doing that for their father. I think the shuffles will be a lovely gift - they come in tons of colours too.

How about a wine bottle opener with NAPA or some well known winery name on it.
If you live far from Northern California, you can also buy one and have it custom engraved with the name of your state/city.

I hate to point out the obvious, but something with Obama and/or McCain on it. I find my European friends really in awe of the whole election thing.
Bumper stickers or mugs or anything related to the election.
I also like the Harley shirt idea. Typically American.

you can get shuffles here in Italy though. I was assuming you wanted to get something you can't find here. And anyway, All the t-shirts we give out when we are here are popular--my italian husband was actually ASKED specifically to bring back t-shirts for a group of co-workers who all really liked his various American shirts. Some of my English students constantly wear their GAP shirts around.
Anyway, that's my advice. The shuffles are fine, but like I said, you can get them here in Italy.
