Etsy was a wonderful site for artists and crafts people for many years but now there is much mass manufactured items.

Venice now offers a license for Asian shop owners to sell glass. That does not mean Venetian glass owners have left Venice to sell elsewhere.
It seems to me the quoted statement above is a gross exaggeration of the truth. There are thousands of artisans who continue to host their "shops" at Etsy.
Again, Etsy is nothing more than an e-commerce hosting site. They provide an opportunity for small-craft business owners to sell their creations safely on the internet, and the owner doesn't have to know anything about web design or e-commerce. For instance, if you are a jewelry designer or you make fabulous marmalades in your kitchen, and you want to sell them, but you don't know anything about html, web design, internet hosting, running a business, and e-commerce, Etsy is a place that can provide all those services for a fee. Etsy has nothing to do with the creation/design of your product or its quality or its popularity.
Several small-craft businesses who host on Etsy have experienced enormous success. And, of course, since competitors don't like that, they fight back with false accusations of "mass marketing," which supposedly goes against the ethos of Etsy. Please. The business of sales is a game, and there's nothing like success to bring out the worst in the competition.
I have received several gifts from Black Wood Works who host on Etsy. The quality of their items is outstanding, and guests to my studio often ask where these items come from. My father was a talented wood-worker, so I am very attracted to beautiful, high-quality, hand-made wood items. A gift from Black Wood Works is an easy way to make me smile.
