getting to Dubrovnik
We will be staying in Tuscany next summer and would love to also spend a day or two seeing Dubrovnik, Croatia. What is the best way to travel there-by ferry or train? If there is a ferry available does anyone know the length of the trip and what Italian cities they depart from?

I don't think Croatia has much of a train system, especially around Dubrovnik. The ferry might be your best bet, or perhaps flying.

I am researching Dubrovnik and Sarajevo right now. I couldn't find a quick way except flying, but I am departing from either Zurich or Munich. I checked the train also. No train at all after Split, but there are buses. I checked on the ferry and it was an overnight. So I have found Lufthansa from MUC to Sarajevo and out of Dubrovnik to Nice for $429 each person. It also depends on the month of travel. We are going September 11, 2010 and most of the cheap airlines discontinue their flights on Sept. 3

You can get to Dubrovnik by overnight ferry from Ancona, which is in Le Marche, next to Tuscany. But, it would be a long trip for only a day or 2. You would spend at least half a day traveling from Tuscany to Ancona and then overnight to Dubrovnik. You might as well just travel down to Rome by train and then fly directly to Dubrovnik.

Ferries from Ancona go overnight to Split, and it's then a bus journey of four or five hours to Dubrovnik. There are ferries from Bari overnight to Dubrovnik.
Even if you fly, the journey will take at least half a day each way.

There is a fast ferry from Ancona to Split about 3-4 hours, can't remember and it was this time last year but I'm pretty sure company name was SNAV. From there is a bus ride somewhere between 4-5 hours to Dubrovnik from Split , they run a bout a dozen times a day. Best way is to fly either from Milan or Rome I believe Ryan Air has flights, otherwise it is a full day of travel like 12-14 hours from Tuscany doing it by train/ferry and bus. Have fun it is BEAUTIFUL!
