My husband and I are going to Paris in May to celebrate my 40th and our 12th anniversary. This will be our first time to Paris. I had decided to book at Hotel d'Aubusson but after further research realized I could book George V throught AMEX for 120K points per night.
On one hand, I realize this is why we have to points...to stay somewhere I wouldn't otherwise want to pay out of pocket for.
On the other hand, it's a big chunk of points (but we will still have plenty left over).
So, i guess the question is...
Is $3800 worth 480K points for
four nights at George V?

What else might you use your points for? How much value can you get for them elsewhere?

I'd prefer the location of d'Aubusson but...hey, the George V "free" ? I wouldn't be thinking about it so much !!!

For free ? NO BRAINER

On a regular basis (daily) I look at the George V online. I walked through the lobby in 2004 and loved it.

I love to travel and do so modestly (pretty word for cheap) but that place rocks. I would definitely go for it.

Please see your visit there as an opportunity for the rest of us to live vicariously through you- a service to all of us who have not (yet) stayed there and to report back to all of us!

As the smallest room at the Four Seasons is 37 square meters, which is larger than every room in the Aubusson, as as it is a 4 star luxe versus the 4 star Aubusson, I would also take it, even though the location of the Aubusson is quite nice and certainly quieter. (I don't know the hotel but do know the location). But do make sure you know the exact room type at the George V that you are getting versus the room size you are giving up? I don't know that I would take the "free" 37 square meter room with an interior courtyard view (or a noisy side street room on the first floor) at the Four Seasons versus the largest room with a view at the Aubusson....be sure you are comparing apples to apples here. (FYI, some of those rooms at the Aubusson are tiny, 20 square meters...)

Some think the George V is the most luxurious hotel in Paris, so -- yes, it's a splurge -- but points are becoming less and less valuable, more difficult to use for flights. You're getting less than a penny a point, though. (And you can get rooms there for between 660-690 EUR a night, so the dollar value is actually $3400-$3600).

I agree with everyone else - you'd be crazy not too do it. Life is short - why not splurge. Mr. TravelBug and I were just in Paris and we staying in a very conservative (ahem, cheap) hotel - we both agreed that next time we go, we're going to splurge. Of all the places in the world that it would make sense for you to spend a few extra bucks, Paris is def. at the top of the list.

I think Willtravel says it best--how much value can you get elsewhere? For me, 480,000 miles represents 2-4 business class roundtrip tickets to europe or asia, and I know I would use them that way. You may have plenty of miles accumulated for free flights, so the George V would be your best way to use up points. What ever you decide, have a great trip and enjoy "spending" your points!
