Gelato Flavors

We are back from our trip to Italy and I'm pulling together my notes for a trip report but first off I thought I'd share my critical research into gelato flavors in hopes of sparing others the stress of translating all those flavors are. Of course you could just play dumb and sample everything ;-)

Before I get to the list, here's a useful thread on best gelato places:

Thanks for adding to the list Judy. I'm surprised no one else has. There was a flavor I asked about at one place that they said was something with caramel but I don't remember what it was called and I couldn't find it anywhere.

I got a lot of these from Giolitti in Rome. They had more flavors than anywhere else we had been, by far, so I decided to take pictures of them and look them up later. Most of the places we went to didn't have the names in English and, although they could usually tell you the flavors, I hated bothering them all the time. Unfortunately, we went to Giliotti on our second to last day in Italy so it didn't help us much.

Come on guys, there's got to be other favorite flavors out there that you can add.

crema - cream

One of my favorite combos at Giolitti was crema, zabaione and riso.

Garlic?!?!? Different strokes for different folks but that would be right up there with popcorn flavored jelly beans in my book. Those just aren't right. I'm sure glad I didn't take a chance and order aglio anywhere. I doubt it "marries" well with chocolate ;-)

I only saw it in two shops in Venice and it was great. It is called El Diablo. It is chocolate with chunks of dark chocolate and pieces of cookies!!

At L'Erta del Bau, a lovely gelateria in the center of Settignano (right next to the city bus stop, #10 from Florence), I had talentone, a combination of crema and mascarpone. It was heavenly.

A flavor I haven't tried yet but hope to find in September is tarocchio - blood orange.
