Blackberry was my favorite. My first hit on that flavor was in Florence one night at a shop where there was, shall we say, a language problem and I didn't understand how to order sizes, and I walked away with a huge cone holding about a quart of the stuff while at the same time trying to calculate just how much I had paid for an ice cream cone (I think it came out to about $7.50 worth of Italian lira). I ate every bit of it and immediately developed a permanent addiction.

Did I miss someone adding "gianduja" (chocolate hazelnut)? I had it in Siena (a couple of times) and actually had DH take my picture with it (pathetic, huh?).

A local gelateria makes honey-lavender - delicate and delicious!

One that I've enjoyed in Sicily is fico d'india (prickly pear).

I am teaching a Gelato course in Calabria in Italy. Today we made a gelato with porcini mushrooms, that is fantastic. The winner was though, basil and vanilla gelato which we served with forest strawberries.

At Della Palma in Rome, they advertise 110 flavors of gelato... and I think I've tried them all. In the winter, I tend to eat chocolates, and they have more than 20 different chocolates. In the summer, we tend to move more towrds fruits and head to Giolitti's - they have the best fruits! Here's a link that talks about many of the best gelato spots in Rome... and I have the waistline to prove my reaearch!!!!
