Gelato Flavors
We are back from our trip to Italy and I'm pulling together my notes for a trip report but first off I thought I'd share my critical research into gelato flavors in hopes of sparing others the stress of translating all those flavors are. Of course you could just play dumb and sample everything ;-)

Castagne- Chestnut |
Thanks for adding to the list Judy. I'm surprised no one else has. There was a flavor I asked about at one place that they said was something with caramel but I don't remember what it was called and I couldn't find it anywhere.
I got a lot of these from Giolitti in Rome. They had more flavors than anywhere else we had been, by far, so I decided to take pictures of them and look them up later. Most of the places we went to didn't have the names in English and, although they could usually tell you the flavors, I hated bothering them all the time. Unfortunately, we went to Giliotti on our second to last day in Italy so it didn't help us much. Come on guys, there's got to be other favorite flavors out there that you can add. |
Thanks, Mdod. We're leaving in two weeks, so I'm printing the list and taking it with me! Awesome job!

crema - cream
One of my favorite combos at Giolitti was crema, zabaione and riso. |
We just got back home as well and I was eager to get reacquainted with my favorite Italian gelato flavor...melone (cantaloupe)...it didn't disappoint!
|
Last year in San Gim I had saffron gelato. Yum.

What about Garlic (Aglio) flavor?
|
Garlic?!?!? Different strokes for different folks but that would be right up there with popcorn flavored jelly beans in my book. Those just aren't right. I'm sure glad I didn't take a chance and order aglio anywhere. I doubt it "marries" well with chocolate ;-)

I still have a sticker from 25yrs ago that says
Io fragola, e tu? |
Crema di Nonna in Bellagio

Thanks for the great list. I'm printing it for my trip in a few months.

Green apple and cinnamon--takes like apple pie! Amazing!
|
Cioccolato e peperoncino. - chocolate and chilli. (much nicer than it sounds)
|
we're also leaving in a few weeks and i'll take the list- thanks! i forgot how many flavors there can be and how confusing -- never get to try the obscure - bc i can't figure out what they are!

I only saw it in two shops in Venice and it was great. It is called El Diablo. It is chocolate with chunks of dark chocolate and pieces of cookies!!

As far as I'm concerned who needs anything other than Nutella gelato?
|
I am not an ice cream lover but I would go back to
San Gimi. just for their to die for chocolate Raspberry gelato! |
In Paris now and I miss Menta...they had it two nights at Amorino but now it's gone. In Italy they had Menta with chocolate chips!

At L'Erta del Bau, a lovely gelateria in the center of Settignano (right next to the city bus stop, #10 from Florence), I had talentone, a combination of crema and mascarpone. It was heavenly.
A flavor I haven't tried yet but hope to find in September is tarocchio - blood orange. |
