Geiranger or Stryn?

While traveling in Norway around Sept 7th, I am looking for a good place to stay for 2 nights,in or around Geiranger or Stryn, Loen area. Looking for best view and access to see sights. Could also use a suggestion for Alesund and Oslo. We like smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts, preferably with a nice view, so we don't miss one minute of the gorgeous scenery! WE have already bookedthe Stalheim near Gudvangen and Roisheim near Lom. Thanks for any help, Nancy

I am on and off holiday at the moment, not having Internet access. But you have had good advise from Bjorn. My advice is going to Voss (either direct or doing the Nutshell but ending in Voss). Actually the scariest road I have ever driven is the road down from Stalheim, happily we did not meet any busses. It is possible driving the tunnel instead, but then you will not get to see this beautiful road. Save Bergen until the end of your journey. If you don't mind a one-way rental fee, starting in Voss ending in Bergen is an option.

I was in Aalesund a few weeks ago and although not staying there Brosundet Guesthouse (Brosundet.no) had a very good location right next to Comfort hotel bryggen. A room facing the canal in either of these would be very good. The Quality Scandinavie is a beautiful hotel in the centre of town but does not offer the same view as the two others.
In Stryn I would recommend staying at the old family hotel Visnes (visnes.no), Vesla Pension B&B is also a good choise (http://www.veslapensjon.no/index.php...amp;f=08050001)

Regarding driving time from Voss (actually drove this a month ago). Voss-Sogndal is aprox. 2 hours, but if driving the old road from Aurand to Laerdal you have to add 1 hour driving time. I do not think this is necessary due to you driving Sognefjellet mountain road to Roisheim not long after. But make sure to drive down to Undredal between the two tunnels going from Gudvangen to Flom. I have often passed, but this year I made it down and got some really nice pictures. Sogndal-Røisheim is aprox. 2 hours and is beautiful.
Røisheim-Geiranger 1,5-2 hours, ferry to Hellesylt leaves Geiranger at 8:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00 taking one hour. Hellesylt-Aalesund 1,5-2 hours depending on the short ferry from Sykkylven.
Ålesund-Stryn is apox. 3 hours.

I often use the route planner mappy.com or the Norwegian visveg.no and they are usually quite good at estimating, but always remember to add time for sightseeing and lunch. And when going by ferry you might have to wait half an hour or so. You don't book ahead when going by local ferry, but I would try to arrive early taking the Geiranger-Hellesylt ferry, due to it going less frequent. The Geiranger-Hellesylt ferry costs 270 for a car with two persons, I remember most other ferries being between 50-100 kroner.

Suggest staying in Stryn or nearby, and doing the circuit Stryn - Hellesylt - ferry to Geiranger - back to Stryn on one of your days, then spend the other for one or two of the glacier arms nearby Loen (Briksdalsbreen and Kjenndalsbreen are the most accessible ones, the former also quite crowded, Bødalsbreen even better if you're up for the 1 hour hike there). Visnes Hotel is a great suggestion, but often fully booked, another option about a 20 minutes drive from Stryn town centre would be the old family run Hjelle hotel (www.hjelle.com), I'd say they've got even a better view than Visnes, but it's slightly more out of the way (closer to Geiranger though).

I have stayed at the Brosundet in Ålesund mentioned above and it's a real gem.
