From Amboise back to CDG- how ambitious?
Tentatively the last day of my trip would be to awaken in Amboise and see one last chateau before leaving the Loire. We would be heading back to spend the night near CDG. Looking at a map, would it be reasonable to think we could stop off at Chartre on the way? Depending on time, the cathedral tour would be optional, even just seeing it would be a bonus.

We did it in reverse, venturing from CDG to Chartres then on to Chinon on the first day of our trip. It was quite do-able.
Chartres should not be missed...it really is impressive. Remember to bring binoculars to get the best view of the exquisite stained glass, wood carvings, etc. We did not take the tour, but you're right...just seeing it is a bonus. I say go for it!

That's an eminently do-able plan. You could easily see a château in the morning, drive to Chartres and have lunch and catch the 2:45 pm Malcolm Miller English tour, and get to CDG by late afternoon/early evening.

In October 2004,we had a flight that left CDG at 2:00 in the afternoon. We spent our last night at the Hotel St. Michel on the grounds of Chambord Chateau. Rooms are quite reasonable (under 100 euros for the best room which has two bedrooms, a dining room, and a bathroom). The best part is being able to view Chambord in the evening and early morning with absolutely no people around.
We left at 7:30 to make certain that we would be at CDG by noon. We were on the motorway at exactly 8:00 AM and turned our car into Hertz at 10:00. We encountered two delays: the motorway was reduced to one lane for construction just before Orleans and there was a bad accident on the motorway on the outskirts of Paris. We still made the journey, filled up the car with gas, and checked-in with over two hours to spare.
